Waterworks Visual Arts Center is the primary arts and education provider and anchor organization for the ermerging East Square Cultural District of Salisbury, NC. The Center's is to provide diverse opportunities in the arts for all people through exhibition, education, and outreach programs. Over 23,900 visitors, which includes 7,700 children and youth, participate annually in Waterworks events and programs. In 1999 the Waterworks earned the distinction of national accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM). The Waterworks was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1959 as the Rowan Art Guild. It moved to its first home in the City of Salisbury’s original Waterworks plant in 1977 and moved into its current, state-of-the-art facility in January 2003.
