My grandfather's slideshows of places around the World inspired me at a young age to learn photography. He taught me a few rules on how to take good photos when I was a kid and my uncle showed me the ins and out and fun (and frustration) of dark room photo processing. After spending a lot of time in the 80's taking photos and processing with a dark room of my own I didn't do much until early 2007 when I bought my new digital SLR and was introduced to flickr. Now I'm learning photography and processing all over again in the digital world.

I love taking photos outdoors preferably in forests, on lakes and yes even peatlands (hence my flickr name). I also spend a lot of time paddling, orienteering, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, adventure running and doing my job (hydrology professor at MAC) in the outdoors.

I'm an avid adventure racer and orienteer and like to mix running with photography and get to locations most photographers don't (or can't). My photographs have
appeared in several magazines including Get Out There, Explore, Outpost, Canadian Running Magazine and Orienteering North America.

    Muskegger (Merritt) says:

"Don't let Mike's recent foray into HDR fool you, he's a master of B&W. With his love of geology and maps, he sees patterns in the land that shine in his images. His work with colour is pretty amazing too.

If you haven't already, go spend some time in PEATmonster's world. "Reminiscent of bonfires by the sea...this one's for the real peat heads""
