Besides photos, I do software and graphic design. I grew up, mostly homeschooled, in the forest on a small island in the Salish Sea. I live mostly there and in Northeast Portland, Oregon.

Ethics: I do not make material changes – disappearing people, zits, power lines, etc., or brightening shafts of light, pasting in soaring eagles, etc. Exceptions are noted or for humor. The general principle is that I don’t do things that would use a brush or selection in Photoshop. I do erase sensor dust, unroll chromatic aberration, and fix other technical problems with the optical system.

Esthetics: I like unusual palettes and color gradients, careful focus and bokē, good timing, and new takes on familiar things. I like a strong sense of place. I dislike obvious HDR, partial desaturation, contrived color casts, selective blurring, and borders. I do not believe in composition.

Flickr habits: I’m annoyed by comments that point out the obvious. If you took a great photo of a mountain, I will not comment with “Great photo of a mountain!”. I’d rather ask specific questions about it or add it to my favorites, which I often review and enjoy.
