Barton)'s photostream

Photographing the high altar at Great Haseley, Oxfordshire, photo by my Flickr friend Martin Beek (Oxfordshire Church Illustrations)
Hello my name is Allan Barton. I'm an unrepentent antiquarian, with a long-held passion for church buildings and medieval art. I once even considered making it my living and tried for a little while to make headway as an academic art historian. I even went as far along that road as getting myself an MA in Medieval Studies and a PhD in History of Art both at the University of York. During the latter my specialism was English medieval stained glass. However, after teaching for a little while other things intervened and I'm currently an Anglican priest living in north Norfolk.
Although my photostream is a standalone resource it's main purpose these days is to provide a pictorial archive for my blogs. My Medieval Ecclesiastical Art Blog 'Vitrearum's Church Art':

Lawrence OP says:
"Allan is a prolific photographer but the quality of his work is undiminished by the sheer quantity he covers. His passion for church architecture and liturgy is grounded in an erudite knowledge of all the best elements of medieval Christianity in England. This knowledge translates well into his photography. I believe his work forms a practical basis for his vision of re-enchanting the Church in England, with beauty, colour and rich incarnational detail.
It has been a delight to photograph with Allan - he is always good fun, kind and energetic, and his wonderful young family is on course to become another generation of church crawlers!"1st May, 2007

Martin Beek says:
"Ever since making contact with Allan (via his photostream) some months ago now, I have greatly enjoyed his images and his comments on medieval art. Whilst strong images are always welcome, part of photograhy's function is record keeping and documentation. Allan's good Art Historical and deep knowledge of his subject gives his pages something very special, something you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere on Flickr. I can't rsist his many images of ancient glass and wall paintings, a record of our links here in England with a rich Christian heritage. Do please take a look at Allan's work you'll find so much that is rewarding and fascinating."
