Profile

My primary interest is in gardening and not photography!

I like working in and developing my own cottage style garden, which is situated in a village in the Chiltern Hills, about 40 miles North West of London in the UK. I enjoy the creative side of gardening too, and often experiment with different planting schemes to add interest, variety, colour and texture to my garden.

I also enjoy visiting other gardens and when doing so I photograph them. So my photo stream consists mainly, but not exclusively, of photographs of gardens. My photos serve to remind me of the pleasant times I have spent in the gardens I visited. They enable me to look in detail at their structure, planting schemes and plant associations. They also provide ideas and inspiration for developing my own garden. All gardens evolve and change over time, so I hope my photos will also provide 'snapshots' of how a particular garden looked on a particular date.

Here in the UK we have an extremely diverse range of gardens, from huge landscape gardens covering hundreds of acres, through large classic and formal gardens such as those managed by the National Trust, to small intimate private and cottage gardens. I aim to reflect some of this range in my photo stream.

I hope some of my photos may be of use to people who are interested in garden design, to tourists who are considering visiting UK gardens and to garden enthusiasts in general. Other Flickr users may also find them useful to include in their calendars, greeting cards, or just to ‘lift their spirits’ on a dull day!

On a final note I feel gardening and photography have a lot in common – as gardeners we try and create beauty, and as photographers we try and capture it.

License Stuff

I am distributing these images on Flickr under a Creative Commons, By Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives license (CC-BY-NC-ND). If you require a license for commercial usage rights, please contact me via my Flickr account as I can provide much higher resolution (approximately 20 Mega-pixel) 16 bit images.

Technical stuff

Most, but not all, of the photos were taken on Fuji color reversal film with a tripod mounted Nikon 35mm camera, with lenses ranging from 18 to 200 mm. They were scanned in with a Nikon film scanner into an Adobe RGB color space to give 16 bit files of around 20 Mpx. They were then edited in Lightroom and Photoshop on a color calibrated quality monitor, before conversion to 8 bit sRGB jpegs for upload to Flickr. The images have been optimally sharpened for on-screen viewing at the Flickr ‘download size’ I am providing (usually around 1920 by 1200) – so you might like to consider further sharpening if you want to make prints from them. Enjoy.
