Self taught artist. I just woke up one day at age forty and had this obsessive urge to create, which continues.

"Just woke up one day" isn't quite accurate. Actually it's the evil telepathic monkey that's been following me for quite some time. Evil may be too strong a word, but what else would you call a monkey that follows you everywhere and pulsates signals into your skull, telling you what to do? Now obviously he doesn't tell me what to do with words, monkeys can't talk, that would be crazy! But I'm sure it's him behind it, putting these obsessive images in my brain that I have to create in order to survive.

Sometimes I'll turn around real fast, and swear I'll catch a glimpse of his tail scurrying around a building. Or hear the leaves through the bushes rustle, and yet see nothing. Sometimes I lie in bed at night when it's really quiet and hold my breath- I can hear an ever so faint grunting outside my window, and I know he's there.

It's ok, I'm used to it, but my biggest fear is one day I'll turn around and he shall not have scampered away, but stand boldly in front of me.

So I go on creating, and I stopped looking over my shoulder. What else can I do?

I also like cooking and downhill skiing.

RESUME:

First 40 years: completely shunned by the art world (true, I wasn't creating anything, but it still stings!)

"Mike, you are an amazing person. After spending some time with you and hearing some of your story, I will always respect you as a true artist. Thank you for your support and your positive energy. You are truly awake - the world could use more and more of your art and your support of the arts. Have fun with your new found passion/obsession, with your family and your friends. A toast to the Irish Artist!"

    "MIKE KELLY!
Mike found a passion like grandma moses and went for it. Yes Mike is the Irish Grandma Moses. heh, okay he's a young Grandma. but its probably not a good idea to call him that to his face. Instead, I'd talk to him about the amazing energy in his line work, his love of the visionary style, or all the great tales he's got stocked away about cool run-ins with musical celebs.
I particularly like the whimsy and mania of his mark making.

Part of Flickr's greatness is the way its given me a chance to view work like Mike's and connect with the individual as well. He's one of those folks I feel lucky to know..."

"Mikey..Mikey..Mikey, oh Mikey! The man who woke up one day & realized he was an artist. THANK GOD!! Mikey IS an artist, without doubt. Mikey pushes subject matter that is both personal & strangely universal. Never would i think such a strange & delightful fellow as Mikey would be able to stretch so communicatively...but he does! His work is extremely accessible if you have but half a heart & a bit of intellect. Mikey's work is profound in the way that it expresses 100% more than what is displayed. The art istself is raw & antagonistic; The message is clear: Fear not & do not pitty such ideas...as these are my own! Mikey IS AN ARTIST!!!....and i've already wathced him grow in only a very very short period of time. We will watch what happens in the dawn of an artist w. great anticipation!!!!!!!!!!"
