The Great lakes
The coastal twin tourist towns of Forster and Tuncurry, set on the shores of idyllic Wallis Lake, are the largest towns within the region.
The region with all its attractions of beautiful lakes, beaches and National Parks has increasingly become a popular lifestyle holiday and retirement destination.
Historically Tuncurry had a significant wooden ship building industry which commenced around 1875 and extended till the early 1950s when steel vessels made wooden ships redundant forcing the closure of the Tuncurry's Wright Shipyards.
Sydney Rock Oyster Farming, Commercial Fishing, Tourism and Lifestyle Industries have been, and continue to be, the main contributors to the the Great lakes economy.
