The Transvaal Scottish Pipes and Drums, fondly referred to as the “Jocks”, are the current South African pipe band champions and are well-known for their stirring and powerful musical performances.

Having won the South African championships on numerous previous occasions (five times in the last six years), the Pipes and Drums continue to excel on the national competition circuit and are acknowledged, both locally and internationally, for the exceedingly high standards of their performances and for the quality and professionalism of their musicians. Many of the band members are national solo champions in their own right and the remarkable success of the band is testimony to the dedication and talent of the individuals involved.

In July 1999, the band participated in the last performances of The Royal Tournament at Earls Court, London in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

The band last performed internationally when it represented the Transvaal Scottish Regiment and South Africa at the inaugural Kremlin Zoria 2007 (Moscow Military Tattoo) held on the Red Square, Moscow in September 2007.

The regimental tartan, the “Murray of Atholl” is worn by the Transvaal Scottish drummers whilst the pipers wear the “Murray of Tullibardine”.

The regimental badge worn by all band members depicts a Scottish thistle on a scroll bearing the motto “Alba num Buadh” (Gaelic for “Well done, Scotland” or “Scotland, home of the virtues”). It is surrounded by a heraldic strap and buckle bearing the regiment’s name, all on the Star of the Order of the Thistle.

The Pipe Major is Craig Whitley, the Drum Major and leading tip is Anthony Evans and the Pipe Sergeant is Stuart Fabian.
