In Tibet, the basic right of freedom of expression does not exist.

Despite assurances to the contrary, the Chinese government continue to follow a draconian policy on freedom of expression and democracy ... and western governments and companies continue to fall in line with these policies. Microsoft, Yahoo and Google have now all kowtowed to the repressive censorship policies that allow the Chinese authorities not only to control what can be read on the Internet, but also to promulgate its own propaganda.

But there are opportunities for change … China is a member of the World Trade Organisation and will have to come in line with WTO compliance policies and working practices. The 2008 Olympics will put China under the world’s scrutiny. There is divergence within the population of China, with an emerging wealthy class wanting things western. There are the beginnings of dissent at grassroots levels, with many people resigning from the Communist party, wanting elections to local councils and even publicly criticising China’s media and information policies.
