This should be made public
The word “publication” by definition means “to make something public” – a strong and loaded act, historically, politically, culturally…
Recent times have focused on new possibilities and technologies for publishing ranging from book-on-demand, small edition digital printing to online publishing, blogs etc.
It is time to shift the focus and think about what it really is that we want to “make public”.
The question of what it is that should be made public is answered differently on an individual as well as cultural basis. The meaning of public and private is shaped by society and culture, as well as political systems.
This project wants to examine the subject of “making something public” and create an opportunity for exchange and discussion in relation to the given theme.
The project will take place in different countries and cultures, examining the subject from different angles and thus collecting a variety of viewpoints on “This should be made public”.
To date “This should be made public” has premiered at Colophon magazine festival, Luxembourg in March 2007, it has taken place in Cairo under the patronnage of the Goethe Institute in October 2007, at the Signjam Festival in MIlan and it will also be featured at the Bangkok Design Festival 2008.
“This should be made public” is a project by the art and design publication “shift!”. To contribute to the project download the card on the shift! website, add your comment and send it to: mail@shift.de
