Proud father of a talented teenager who wants to get a tattoo.
Until getting an Olympus EVOLT E-500 for Christmas 2005, I'd avoided taking photos for 25 years... Wow, this is fun!

Thanks for visiting!
謝謝光臨!

oh, and I'm a formalist kind of guy.

Art and Form

"...either from want of skill or want of will, primitives neither create illusions, nor make display of extravagant accomplishment, but concentrate their energies on the one thing needful—the creation of form."
--Clive Bell

'Remember, that a picture, before it is a picture of a battle horse, a nude woman, or some story, is essentially a flat surface covered in colours arranged in a certain order.' --Maurice Denis

    Ms Corky says:

"Once you view dbthayer’s photo stream you will find yourself returning time and time again. His images are powerful and striking in the most elegant of ways; both in style and content. When you see them you will know what I mean. He is able to communicate the essence of a moment in time that rings eternal and leaves an echo. He is exquisitely talented, yet humble. His dry wit is the perfect compliment to his imagery. Ms Corky"

" db, I find myself returning to your photos time and time again. True beauty in all of your shots (and titles). You have a gift and I am glad I was lucky enough to find your work. I am looking forward to many more beautiful images, as I'm sure many others are also. THANKS!!"

"I actually knew Doug from before his 25 year recess and find it completely unsurprising to see this level of ability. He always had it. As with all the really good ones, talent wins out eventually. By the way, I still have one of your books and the cumulative weight of guilt over the years is staggering. May I return it, or make good somehow?"

"Doug is a photographer who knows what he is about. His mastery of form and color is astonishing at times. Whenever you get to caught up in gadgetry, a look around here will remind you that photography is about the eye."

    Seattle Daily Photo says:

"dbthayer is one of my five fave photographers on Flickr. I have to avoid visiting his stream too often because I have a life and can't spend all the time I would like with these images. I also find it hard not to favorite nearly all of them. It's all in his way of seeing and then presenting what he see's. His sensitive framing of shots and eye for color, form, rhythm, value, line, and pattern make his work truly special.

"I'm a recent convert to the magic that is dbthayer. His marvelously honed eye for beauty in the simplest of forms has me returning to his photostream again and again.

And I gotta say, it takes rare skill and a hefty dose of magic to set a girl daydreaming about a vacation in...Bowling Green, Ohio?!"

"I've "known" Doug for a few years here on Flickr, but today was the first time I sat down to take a good look at his photostream... Oh! What I've been missing! This is one of the most outstanding collections on Flickr... an amazing combination of skill and subjects all perfected throught Doug's unique vision of his world. I stand in awe! This is a photostream that should be your first stop when you log on to Flickr. Thanks Doug, for sharing your truly outstanding work with us on Flickr... I for one really appreciate it!"

His photos are a gift, a beautiful vision, a different way of seeing what is already there."

"Anyone who wants to see beautifully composed, consistent excellent photography stop reading this silly testimonial and look for yourself: www.flickr.com/ph....

Lots of people take excellent pictures on flickr, but of the hundreds and hundreds I've seen over the past year, few can match Douglas's consistency.

All the more amazing/scary is that he took a 25-year hiatus from photography and has only been back at it for a few months.

    Doesn't seem very fair."
