I am a Boston-based Germany-based (Frankfurt, Hannover, Nürnberg) photographer doing (mostly) black & white available light photography - lately I started to be also more into colors I have to admit...

So what does this mean? Available light photography (alp)? Put simple it means: throw away all the tech stuff such as flashs, reflectors, etc. and do it the “natural” way, using the natural, available light. You might wonder now if this is just another way to be fancy or to do something simple in a complicated way. The answer is no. The big difference is that the images are so much more natural, realistic, and authentic. Also, each shooting is so much more about doing the right things at the right time.

Sure, I have to admit that I started doing available light photography out of necessity. I just couldn’t afford buying expensive equipment and so I learned to use what I had: my camera. In the beginning I just used a Canon EOS 450D with the kit lens – nothing else (except for a tripod sometimes). Even though times have changed now, I still believe in this minimalistic concept. Those nay-sayers might contemplate that this is because I am incapable of using sophisticated equipment. Maybe.

I recently felt that I needed to update my profile. The main reason being that I guess I start to more and more understand my own approach to photography much better. I mean it is not that what I wrote above is not true but I do think that it does not fully capture what I mean. Or maybe it became clearer to me over time: the essential point is that I want to create something nice and beautiful. Things are not (always) nice but I have the chance, by choosing a nice angle etc., to make them look nice. This is for example what I tried to express in my Bokeh-shots recently: simply making things look nice. Nothing more, nothing less.
