The Lower East Side Tenement Museum promotes tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of a variety of migrant and immigrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America.

In restored and unrestored apartments in a landmarked 1863 tenement on Orchard Street, museum visitors learn about the immigrant experience in what was once the most densely populated place on earth.

We tell the stories of real families who lived in this building from 1863 to 1935. We also talk about how their lives are different or the same as those of New York's current immigrants.

The Museum hosts a variety of programs, including Tenement Talks, an evening event series that explores New York's rich culture.

On Flickr you'll see photos of our restored apartments, restorations currently in progress, and Tenement Talks programs.

"I visited the Tenement museum during my first visit to New York. A very interesting experience. You could almost feel what the people who lived there felt!"
