Wake up Pune in association with The Staying Alive foundation, MTV Global Networks,
has launched the TAKE10! Campaign in Pune, India.

2.4 Million People were estimated to have been living with HIV in 2007, and India’s HIV prevalence rate among adults aged 15-49 was estimated at 0.3%. However, in Pune alone, the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society had reported an HIV prevalence rate of 1.8%, far higher than the national average, i.e. 0.3%.

Every year there are more and more people infected by HIV, which shows that many people are ignorant about the virus or are misinformed or don’t have the skills or resources to protect themselves .There are alarmingly low levels of awareness and understanding about HIV amongst many sections of society. Our prime objective is building a positive attitude among the youth of Pune towards awareness, education and supporting People Living With HIV. So through HIV awareness workshops, theatre, photography, film-making, posters, writing, art, condom cricket and more, the TAKE10! Campaign aims to reach out to the people of this city to break the silence, stop stigma and discrimination, get tested and prevent new HIV infections because YOUth can make a difference!

******* Staying Alive is an MTV international initiative to encourage HIV prevention, promote safer lifestyle choices and fight the stigma and discrimination which fuels the HIV epidemic. Started in 1998, Staying Alive is now the world’s largest HIV mass media awareness and prevention campaign. Twice yearly, the Foundation presents the Staying Alive Awards: small grants that support innovative projects in schools, youth centers, and clubs using radio, TV, print, on-line and personal interactions that reach at-risk youth and protect them from the multiple problems posed by HIV and AIDS. Over 900 applications were sent for this June round, of which Wake Up Pune was one of the 30 selected for the grant. *********
