Michael Swigart, 1945-2008
Our beloved friend Michael Swigart passed away on July 30, 2008. He was an adventurer, thinker, philosopher, gentleman, poet & photographer. He had a wicked sense of humor and a wonderfully deep voice. He was always the most alive person in the room, but in a quiet and meaningful way. He will be greatly missed.
Michael uploaded more than 7700 photos onto this site during the last two years. He had a wonderful show of his work up at the Twentynine Palms City Hall in June and he sold a number of pieces. He asked me to maintain the site for him, which I am honored to do.
These photos are the property of the Estate of Michael Swigart and may not be reproduced or blogged without permission.

Visible Narrative says:
"I am saddened to hear of Michael's passing. I was so looking forward to meeting him in person on our next trip to California.
I offer this poem by by Gerard Manley Hopkins as a remembrance to the life that was Michael Swigart and solace for those whose lives he touched.
Spring & Fall: To A Young Child
Margaret, are you grieving
Over Goldengrove unleaving?
Leaves, like the things of man, you
With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?
Ah! as the heart grows older
It will come to such sights colder
By & by, nor spare a sigh
Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;
And yet you wíll weep & know why.
Now no matter, child, the name:
Sorrow's springs are the same.
Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed
What héart héard of, ghóst guéssed:
It is the blight man was born for,
It is Margaret you mourn for."20th September, 2008

Chris and Irene says:
"We met Michael when he was just starting his journeys in Alamos, Mexico in December, 2006 and we did keep in touch with him. We enjoyed his company, watched his Flicker site grow and followed his travels. He spent many hours sitting by the Plaza in Alamos, working on his pictures and sharing them with us. We enjoyed his company and he will be missed.
Our Condolences and thoughts are with his family and we appreciate receiving the notice of his passing.
Yours sincerely,
Irene and Chris

planeta says:
"I never met Michael but we connected a number of times online, starting with the creation of the rec.travel.latin-america group years ago. When Michael tracked me down on Flickr a few years ago we again exchanged a number of positive comments. It's good to hear that this outstanding archive will be maintained so that Michael's view of the world will continue to inspire."

Rod Anzaldua says:
"Im still impressed with the news. I think that Michael is better than us right now, he has no pain at all and he is filled with joy. And now he donesn't have to take a plane or a bus to get to another place to visit, he is just there all the time. To all his friends and family, i wish quick recovery for the loss of a great man.

"Michael was my very first "mentor" when I was fairly new to Flickr. He advised me on several things, and was always quick to comment on my photos.
I will miss Michael's photos as well as his comments in times to come.
So long, Michael. I, for one, will continue to use your site for inspiration.
