my name is Wile E. Coyote.....Super Genius

What you won't find here is any consistent presentation of either subject or media. This is after all, a sketchbook. I prefer not to eat the same thing night after night, and as such, prefer not to dwell on the same photo genre or medium, be it film or digital. Sure, I may post the same thing for 3-5 days....and then...suddenly...something completely different and discontinuous. Sorry for the schizophrenia. But it will be more interesting this way. Trust me. I think. Or I hope.

Welcome to my sketchbook!
You will see all sorts of things here. They will be the same, they will be different, they will be random.

The screen name is not meant to be a proclamation or assumption of incredible intellect. Instead, it is much more representative of the Warner Brothers cartoon character from which it was taken. Wile E Coyote was always full of ingenious ideas and inventions in the hopes it would help him catch his ‘dinner’ the infamous “Road Runner”. Countless times he would try only to be humbled again and again as the Road Runner outsmarts him. Just as the coyote was repeatedly humbled, so to am I, as I see all the wonderful photos in flickr. I choose not to focus on Wile E’s failure but rather his perseverance as I strive to continually improve my photography skills.

The Super G moniker was actually bestowed upon me years ago by coworkers as my ‘call sign’ in a virtual reality flight simulator and it obviously kind of stuck.

I really began photography seriously in architecture school, which probably explains all of the building shots clogging up my photostream! ;-) I was doing mainly black and white on a Chinon film SLR with some Pentax lenses. I even managed to turn my limited experience into a paying job as a student assistant to the darkroom. Later, I slipped into the digital world by way of my current point and shoot cameras – An Olympus C4000 4mp and a Fuji FinePix A600 6mp. While I love the ease of a point and shoot, I find them frustrating at the same time. But they still have excellent uses especially if you don't use the zoom. I primarily use a Nikon D80 DSLR. Straight out of the box it has to be one of the easiest cameras I've ever used - and that includes point and shoots. And there is lots of room for experimentation with this camera.

I have recently embarked on a return to my photographic roots by experimenting with self developed 35mm & Holga, Argus and Voigtlander Brilliant medium format BW film. The negatives will be developed by me and digitized with a Canoscan 8800f. Sometimes, I think I actually can't indulge in film as much as I'd like.....or maybe it's just I can't post them as quickly as I'd like.

Photography is so much more than great equipment though. It’s about seeing. Seeing what others don’t and capturing it. Capturing light in a jar. Easier said than done. But flickr has definitely helped me improve. I am now rarely without a camera. Everyday trips to places I’ve seen a million times now show me a completely new “layer” of information waiting to be captured. I walk around like a freak of nature saying things like “oooh! look at that shadow or pattern or reflection …..” and it’s not uncommon for me to salivate over the great early morning or late afternoon light. But it certainly makes for a more enjoyable day. And the scary part is that I no longer care when I hear a stranger nearby say, “hey, look at that guy. Why is he taking a picture of a crack in the wall?”

Those that visit my photostream will find quite the mixed bag of subjects. flickr is my sketchbook. My photos are very much about my daily life. What I see and where I am at the time. And that varies quite a bit. Sometimes, I swallow a photojournalism pill and everything is horrendously in ultra tack sharp focus for 24-48 hours. I also experiment , at which point you may be asking if it was more than just one pill that i took. So you will see the good the bad and the ugly with hopefully one or two you can stomach. I'd like to branch off into more portrait work. Anyone willing to model, please drop me an email. We certainly can exchange portfolio photos for posing.

I try to comment on other photos with more than a one-word response (but I’m guilty of that too!). I find that leaving a comment can also be a learning experience because you really have to study the photo and pull out what it was that got your attention in the first place.

If you're not passionate about life, how can you be passionate about photography?

"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." --Alfred D. Souza

"I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it." -- Pablo Picasso

My portraits [photos] are more about me than they are about the people I photograph. -- Richard Avedon

A great photographer should “fully express what one feels in the deepest sense about what is being photographed” “When I’m ready to make a photograph, I see in my minds eye something that is not literally there in the true meaning of the word. I’m interested in something that is built up from within rather than just extracted from without.” --Ansel Adams

Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.
--Peter Adams

a few quotes from Harry Callahan

"I wish more people felt that photography was an adventure the same as life itself and felt that their individual feelings were worth expressing. To me, that makes photography more exciting."

Harry had three main subjects throughout his career: buildings, nature, people. In talking about keeping those subjects so long he had this to say,

"I just had the feeling that I wanted to go back to the same ideas, knowing that they would be different, yet still the same."

He also had many tips for future photographers.

"The mystery is not in the technique; it’s in each of us."

"To be a photographer, one must photograph. No amount of book learning, no checklist of seminars attended, can substitute for the simple act of making pictures."

"I do believe strongly in photography and hope by following it intuitively, that when the photographs are looked at, they will touch the spirit in people."

"Experience is the best teacher of all. And for that, there are no guarantees that one will become an artist. Only the journey matters."

I believe Harry Callahan was very wise. His work speaks for itself and serves as an inspiration to many. My journey begins here.

"Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching.
Time waits for no one." --Crystal Boyd

    "The man with the tags...

I can't remember when I first came across Tim's work but it was early days in my photography journey, since when he's always been there - a mentor and an inspiration. I admire his insights, the humour and the curiosity that drives him to stretch the boundaries.

Robert Browning said "A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?" It strikes me that Tim appreciates this completely as he seems to be most comfortable seeking out new horizons and discovering new possibilities. And the product of his curiosity is a unique portfolio of wonderful photographs...

    ...And the best tags ever!"

"Tim ( Super G) was one of the first people I got to know on flickr, and his comments and ideas have helped me develop as a photographer. He is a suberb photographer with an eye toward almost cinematic shots. All his work has more going on than what there seems to be at first glance; there is a story in every one. Tim is a photographer who contastly pushes boundries, and stretches his skills. Whether its investigating abandoned sites, exploring the details of buildings, self-portraiture, or street photography that he's shooting, this is a flickrstream you will love and learn from too."

"Super G has a great eye and what I love more in his work as photographer is the capacity to find a second soul for the subject of his photo; an object, a building, or whatever he see, showing you a different view, a different side to consider it. Imagination or simply a description of a new dimension??..he can! Ok I stop here 'cause I dont want SuperG to "kid yourself".. :)!!
Keep up the good work dear flickfriend, hope to grab somenthing..and thanks for beeing a constance presence to my stream!"

"I grew enthusiastic about this stream when Super G featured his 'mystery' series. That got me on the edge of the seat trying to figure out the 'mystery'. I enjoyed the exercise he proposed to the viewer by unveiling the series in the reverse order that the pictures were taken. I found it exciting and challenging and paraphrasing Super G it challenged the visual vocabulary. The series featured colours, angles, lightning, perspectives, framing, textures and more. a true masterpiece of the display creativity .

In addition to his photographic aptitudes, he is an accomplished photo critic performing unmatched, in depth, first-rate analysis."
