STATEMENT:
I love drawing from life. My location drawings are created "en plein air", with some details and ink wash done later at home from memory. My figure works are from weekly drawing sessions at Paul Vincent Studios in Hoboken, NJ. The ladies of Spitfyre Productions book great models from the NYC area.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE:
FEBRUARY, 2010
My drawings are colored pencils and pens on acid-free kraft paper, using white pencil to pull out the highlights and increase contrast. The oatmeal-colored paper works as a high/mid tone and I lay down saturated colors for the mid/dark tones. The result is a bright, crisp rendering. These drawings range from 4"x6" to 8"x10".
SEPTEMBER, 2010
Recently I've been drawing with watercolor pencils and ink. I'm working on contour lines and broad washes. I've been playing with purposeful distortion, making areas of the body obviously larger or smaller as an visceral interpretation of the fleshy model and the composition on paper. It gives a mannerist affect, influenced by Alice Neel and Parmigianino. Most of these images are 9"x12".
DECEMBER, 2010
For drawings on location I've settled on a set of Sakura Micron pigment pens, sizes 01 & 05 in sepia, 08 in black, and a Derwent ink pencil in "Bark". I'll use the 05 pen to lay in all shapes and contours, then use 01 for details and 08 for shadows. I sketch in shading with the ink pencil, which is dissolved later into a rich, gradient ink wash. All location work is on Stonehenge or Utrecht American Masters paper, white, 100% cotton, 90lb, 5"x7".
Nude figure drawings have moved into brush and ink, based on advice from viewers of my pictures in the fall. I love being able to brush in massive areas of solid black, in balanced contrast to the white of the paper. Haven't settled on a paper or dimensions yet, and am experimenting with different inks.
