Originally from Hull, I moved to Plymouth as a student in 1984 and have been here ever since. I currently teach environmental science and marine science at the university.

My interest in outdoor photography was kindled by the landscapes and seascapes of south west England and my professional research into various aspects of the marine and terrestrial environment. My favourite regional locations for photography are Burrator, the Blackslade and Bonehill regions of Dartmoor, the Penwith peninsula and the coast around Newquay. Further afield, it’s Snowdonia, the Lake District, Connemara, Finistere and Malta.

I have been using Canon EOS SLRs for about twenty years and currently have a 550d and 350d. I use a variety of lenses but have recently rediscovered my 70-300 mm Sigma f5.6 lens for landscapes and close ups, picking out elements from afar, compressing distances and creating interesting bokehs. I often use a polariser and usually employ graduated neutral density filtration; I also experiment with long exposures using a B&W ten stopper. Any processing is done in Lightroom, GIMP and JACS PSP.

I have been inspired by many of the images seen on Flickr and since joining my photography has improved and diversified. I have had a few of my photos published in papers and journals but photography is really just a hobby for me. My other interests include football, cricket, music and trivia.
