SmartMeme’s mission is to build movements and amplify the impact of grassroots organizing with new strategy and training resources, values-based communications, collaborations, and meme campaigning. SmartMeme uses the power of narrative to advance a holistic vision of grassroots social change that connects struggles for democracy, peace, justice, and ecological sanity.

SmartMeme supports social change initiatives by offering tools, training, and strategy development. We connect leaders to develop shared stories and common visions for change, and collaborate with a diverse range of organizational partners. SmartMeme innovates practices in the sector through experimentation, research and development, and creative cultural intervention.

SmartMeme has trained over 2,000 activists and collaborated with over 60 organizations since 2002. We have found that story is a powerful tool to reach across issues, connect generations, and bridge the fault lines of race, gender, and class. We have applied story-based strategy in a range of different contexts: from youth-veteran collaborations to end the war in Iraq, to challenging the destructive practices of multinational corporations, to efforts to promote the Precautionary Principle as a policy tool for environmental justice.

We believe that fundamental social change in not only possible but urgently needed, and that people powered grassroots social movements, led by people who are most
