ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a documentary photographer using digital processes with an extensive background in traditional methods and techniques. My work is essentially a record of the practice of watching and listening to the present moment with disciplined attention. My subject matter varies widely, but it is most often moments rather than specific places and things.

Most of my images are made journalistically in response to the society and environment around me. The moments and situations I photograph are those where I find something deeply personal and emotionally significant. I am fascinated by simple, everyday human gestures and actions which seem to transcend the time frame of individual lives and connect people to each other.

I also make images about dreams and dream states that I have experienced while both asleep and awake. Using montage techniques, I overlap and layer multiple images into single compositions that express the impression of these dreams.
