Simon Caplan (away for a
while)'s photostream
|
I am a 52-year-old Londoner living in Bristol in the south west of England, UK. I shoot in 'raw' on either a Canon 5D Mark II or a Canon EOS 350D.
I use these lenses:
Canon EF L series 24-105mm
Canon EFII f1.8 50mm
Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM zoom
Sigma DG 105mm 1:1 f2.8 Macro
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC Zoom (350D only - lens currently damaged!)
Sigma 10-20mm DC (350D only).
Processing - usually done sparingly and as subtly as I can - is with Adobe CS4 inc Camera Raw and Photoshop.
I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society and was awarded my Licentiateship of the Society (LRPS) in June 2011.
As you can see from my photostream, I have a bit of an obsession for 'urban abstracts' and colourful subjects but also like to shoot shallow depth-of-field still lifes and, given the chance, people at work (environmental portraits). On a sunny day when I can get the shutter speeds at the long end of a zoom, I will do street candids. Photographically speaking, I have a limited interest in landscapes and no interest in wildlife or outdoor sport - though in real life I love the outdoors, animals and football (soccer). I cannot stand photography that pretends to be 'arty' when it's taken with gimmicky film cameras (lomo/holga etc) or i-phones etc when in fact it is simply poorly composed, out of focus and badly exposed.
I welcome critique and constructive feedback and would love to link up with others for a frank exchange of views and ideas. I am not simply interested in sharing 'awards'. Please try to avoid posting daft graphics and silly logos - I would rather hear your thoughts about the images not just know that you saw it in a group somewhere.

Mark-Stone says:
"I help run Reflex Camera Club and we were lucky enough to have Simon present an evening of his photography. Simon got the evening off to a great start by explaining just what he hopes to achieve when he takes a photograph but instead of trying to make it sound all arty and full of technobabble he did it in an easy to follow and uncomplicated way. The words were punctuated by some wonderful images which when they appeared on the screen made you stop, look and then think “hang on a minute. I’ve seen that a million times! Why didn’t I take that photograph?”. His images are full of the little details, symmetry and colours that hundreds of people will walk past every single day and not even notice. It really does make you wonder how you could be so blind, How you’ve never really looked at your surroundings.
I’ve actually had emails from a few club members saying how much they enjoyed the evening. That’s never happened before, so I can honestly say if you get the opportunity to see a presentation by him go. You won't regret it."21st October, 2011

"Simon is a recent contact, I do not know him personally, and unfortunately I'm sorry for not having discovered his photos sooner. Technically he dominates apertures and can transmit in his photos the technique and history of the photo... he doesn´t simply dump photos in his photostream! A photowalk with Simon will be something overwhelming!"

Jem Salmon says:
"Simon has given me, through his own ability, knowledge and friendship the confidence for me to break out of my own photographic shell in 2010.
His genuine enthusiasm, thirst for knowledge and patience when explaining the basics to me has been truly inspirational and allowed my photography to grow - for that i will be eternally thankful.(If if was not for Simon i would still be using IS when using a tripod and getting all bent out of shape when my photos are not sharp!)
I really cherish the days when we go out shooting together as they are not only a fantastic learning experiance for me but fun.Simon is a modest man and often underplays his ability with the camera, but his photographs, and especially his Macro shots have been inspirational to me.
I class Simon as not only a great photographer, but perhaps even more importantly a great friend.
Jem ;-)"2nd January, 2011
