Iain Gilmour (Silver
Doctor)'s photostream
|

I take photographs to give the left side of my brain a rest from the day job. Every now and then I actually manage to take a photograph that makes me feel like I know what I'm doing. I work mainly, though not exclusively in monochrome - I like the inherently surreal nature of monochrome photography and the artistic process involved from the taking of the initial photograph through to the final 'print'.
I got my first 'real' camera, a Russian Zenit EM, in 1972 and had it for 8 years before losing it in a peat bog on the Isle of Skye while doing field work as a student geologist! Equipment replacement since then has been more planned, moving from the Olympus OM system to Nikon in 1994. Although I'd not had a darkroom since 1986, it took me until 2005 to finally make the switch to digital though I still like to use film every now and then.
Thank-you for your interest in my stream, your comments are very much appreciated. I really enjoy the reciprocal nature of flickr but this means that I have to try and keep the number of contacts I have at a manageable level so that I can properly take the time to look at your photographs and comment. Unfortunately it also means that I won't always be able to add new contacts and may have to remove contacts who are not particularly flickr active.
Why Silver Doctor?
Well, to explain the origins of my handle "Silver Doctor" needs a lateral jump. In addition to photography, I'm a passionate fly fisher and I adopted the online handle "Silver Doctor" some time back as it is the name of a classic salmon fishing fly and, some might say, also adequately describes this greying middle aged academic!

"He is so good that is almost imposible! Compositions, perspectives, motives, details, people, movements - everything with a great sense for balance, tones, contrast, and (above all) for some story behind the picture which make it alive! Great great photographer!"

"Working in monochrome is new for me but it's a challenge and it's opened my eyes to some fabulous work. And it's been Iain's work - especially the great composition along with tones and contrast that cry out to be admired - that has been the inspiration I needed. Added to all this, Iain has been of great practical assistance. Very many thanks indeed, Iain, for showing me just how much colour there is in black & white :)"

"There are only a few B&W photographers here on FLickr that have the ability of not only making great photos but also of inspiring others. Iain Gilmour - Silver Doctor - is one of them. One of the very first photos I've seen of his were his brilliant still life tributes to Karl Blossfeldt. And right after seeing those photos I fell in love with his style of photography and his understanding of tones. Because whenever I think of Iain, I think of tones. But that's not his only feat. Take a look at his compositions and you will see that there's much more to his art than beautiful tones only. Long exposure photography for example is a niche that Iain also masters so well. Just view his Wind mill shot, Milling the Wind I, then you will agree with me that it is a great example of incorporating the beauty of long exposure photography with brilliant compositioning and toning. One of the best windmill shots I've ever seen and exemplifying Iain's skills and vision as a photographer. Or take a look at his recent animal shots in B&W. Now that's original photography and great use of the power
of B&W. But let's not forget the most important thing besides his craftsmanship. And that's his great personality. He's always there
to give you some positive comments and he's just a great contact to have around here on Flickr. And with all this, he inspires me.
Hats off to you Iain,
Joel"13th July, 2009

"Even a casual swim through Iain's photostream reveals that a photographer of great technical and aesthetic skill has been at work. Indeed, his work reveals a stunning eye for detail often manifested by wonderfully geometric creations that fill the entire field of his photos. All of Iain's work, which includes seascapes, landscapes, "streetscapes" and even "peoplescapes," represents both a compelling and a beautiful collection of art, but one piece in particular, "Asymmetric Congruent Polygons I," stands out as one of my favorite photos I have seen on flickr, one that I think expresses everything I admire about his work: technical excellence, superb eye for detail, precision framing, and wonderful creativity. Indeed, because of these excellent technical and aesthetic qualities, I look forward to enjoying and learning from each and every one of his photos."

"I'm amazed that you don't have any testimonials yet. I'm honored to be first. Silver Doctor has an amazing eye for angles and perspective. His compositions are supurb and his conversions to black and white are breathtaking. I've learned so much from him and I constantly come back to his photostream for inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful work!"
