Sightsavers International is UK charity dedicating to combating avoidable blindness worldwide. Did you know that 75% of global blindness can be prevented of cured? Quite staggering when you consider the fact that there are 37 million blind people in the world. This greatly affects poverty and life span in some of the poorest communities across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, where we work through local partners.
We also help rehabilitate those who are irreversibly blind, helping them contribute back into society and their local economy, and lead fulfilling lives.
We are lucky enough to have a number of loyal celebrity ambassadors, such as national treasure Joanna Lumley and ex-England international footballer Graeme Le Saux.
We're partial to a cataract operation or two, distributing Mectizan to prevent river blindness, and educating people about sanitation issues to prevent the spread of blinding infections like trachoma. We also like influencing decision makers through our advocacy work - such as campaigning for all disabled children to be in school.
