I am definitely over 21, but I will let you do the math. I was born in 1963. (Level your horizon.)

While I was considering the purchase of a Sony Alpha A900 I asked a couple of questions in a group about reports that it was noisy above iso 400. Although I was only asking questions about the camera itself, I received this piece of unsolicited advice:

"Don't take this the wrong way man, but taking a look through your stream, I dont see why you would need a full frame camera. I feel like if you're going to get a top of the line camera, it should be because your skill is becoming limited by the camera you already have. I personally think it would be a waste of good money for you right now based on your level of shooting." [Emphasis added].

Into every life a little rain must fall, I guess this guy thought he'd be my rain. I am saving this gem in case I ever get a big head, I can read this and become humble once again.

But it doesn't end there. Later came this:

"So if your intention is to improve your photography, it is my opinion that you could stand to improve that in many ways that are less destructive to your bank account."

In another discussion, he accused me of wanting the camera merely as a "status symbol."

And then when I posted to the discussion that I had actually ordered the A900, this:

"Hell must have frozen over..... "

Bullies don't just exist on the school playground, children! (Level your horizon.)

A900 as Status Symbol

Oh well, on to other topics. I am on an anti-Bokeh word campaign! Pronounced bouquet, it's a bunch of flowers in a bundle, and pronounced Boca, its a place that ends in Raton. Used to refer to the blurry background in a photo by anyone who is not Japanese, it's pretentious. (Level your horizon.)

Got this from the Sony website: "Circular aperture enables pleasing defocus effects. " That will do it for me from now on: "lovely defocus effect in that photo." Screw bokeh. [UPDATE: someone in the Sony Alpha group suggested just calling it "backblur." Love it. From now on, it's "backblur" to me. Describes exactly what it is, and does not require discussions on how to PRONOUNCE it!

I have been taking photos since I was a kid and bought an old used camera in a thrift store. And in all those years, the things I know about photography could fill a thimble. I plan to change that. Now that I am a little older, I hope to get much more into photography. (Level your horizon.)

Oh, and I'm a gay man. I mention that last because it's the least important. (Level your horizon.) Being gay does not define me any more than being straight defines a heterosexual man. That said, I am not ashamed of it either - and having been raised in a right-wing Christian household, it took some time for me to be able to say that. And I still believe in God. I think he believes in me too.

OH, and level your horizon.

    BKHagar *Kim* says:

"When I first came to Flickr, as with many of us, I knew nobody up here. Simon was someone I was drawn to immediately, for his exquisite work, for his ability to give OR take constructive criticism, for the beautiful art he shares every day. His work is of the highest caliber, every shot given the care and patience it deserves. His attention to detail is fabulous and enviable! I know that I will never be as patient or as meticulous! His eye for a great shot is impeccable, and his willingness to encourage another struggling photographer is wonderful! I admire his work, and best of all, he is my great friend! I know the best is yet to come! Keep on shooting, Simon! I look forward to your sharing EVERY day!
