I take pictures
of things I think are pretty.
of things I want to remember.
of things I think should be seen.

Ansel Adams once expressed his dislike of the terms usually expressed in the creation of photography: shoot, take. Those words describe photography something violent, penetrative, non-consensual, arrogant. He much preferred the word "make."
I perceive many photographers as being the artistic equivalent to a bull in a china shop. They take without thought or care, doggedly pursuing what they call their "art." We are not painting or drawing or sculpting or writing; ours is not such an imperfect or flexible medium. Learning the difference between capturing what is and what we see or feel are different things, countries whose tenuous border is art.
I despise those photographers who think they're hot stuff because they have a few thousand $ or € or £ on glass and equipment. They respond to a set of rules defined by their personal style or whatever image they are pursuing. They distance themselves from their subjects through all that equipment. They don't appreciate the - I daresay quantum - connection we share with our subjects. By observing, we change. It's our responsibility to respect and honor that relationship, to abandon all the fluff and things that separate us from our environment, to be more simple and innocently emotional in pursuit of our images.
The only way we'll ever lose our reputation of stealing people's souls is if we take time to savor and appreciate those souls and what they mean to us, what they give to us when we photograph them.
