"Don was one of my first contacts on Flickr. He is generous and kind with his feedback on your work and I always appreciate what he has to say. It makes me want to use my camera more and more.
It goes without saying after looking at his photostream what a talent he is behind the camera. I am inspired all the time by his photography and always look forward to seeing what magic he will have captured next. The world looks different through his lens. It's a very inviting place."

"Don is one of those people that really makes you feel awkward with your camera. The caliber which Don shoots at is unbelievable, in amount and quality, and never ceases to amaze me. With the total understanding of the rural environment that surrounds him, the perspectives and elements that he is captures is one of the most refreshing views of the South I have seen. A huge inspiration and support on my view of the world and photography work, I really cannot express how appreciative I am to have stumbled across this photography stream. Keep on keeping on Don!"

"Along with his friendly eloquence and heartfelt appreciation of the beauty of a memory, Mr "Don" "Danceman" Shiphome possesses a fine pair of eyes that see color as light and shadow and America as light and shadow too. His interpretation of both is sublime."

"It's no secret that we live in troubling times. As of late, Americans are consistently reminded of the past’s most serious hardships and misfortune, juxtaposed against our current socio-economic trials.

Lest we not forget there was beauty in the past. Hope and faith could be found in the unlikeliest of places. Photographers like Don are a special sort because they illuminate the strength, dignity and grace of yesteryear. Aptly, Don's visual documentary of our American roots speak volumes today."

"Don shows us the real south... the creeping, musty, kudzu and shadows that perfectly complement listening to an old REM album.

One of my favourite people on Flickr !"

don is the visionary of colours and a great observer of the world around us.

his work is a huge asset to the flickr community and it is affected by creativity, beauty and finesse.

i always appreciate his thoughtful and eloquent comments and i am really happy to regard him as a friend."

"Don is a true friend. When I visit his stream I feel like I am hanging out with someone I've known forever. When he comments on my photos its like he's at my house chillin' on the sofa. And I especially appreciate his eye--he has a sense for the South, and the way it is impacted by modernity. He approaches subject matter as a document, letting you see into deeper readings, but thankfully not without empathy and passion. And in case you hadn't noticed, no-one sees the colour orange like he does."

"Well... Don amazes me. I keep thinking (for some reason) that I know where he's going and then his next set of shots blow me away. For a cynic in reform, he is one of the most pleasant, supportive and positive people I've come across in this community. His comments are so honest and thoughtful that at times I find myself stumped as what to say about his own stream, because I'd like to at least TRY to be that candid and give him the amount of time he gives others. I don't know how. But I try, and it's because of him that I do.
His shots are honest, simple, complex, interesting... just like his own words. Glad to have made his acquaintance, absolutely."

"It has been a true joy to meet Don on Flickr. He is one of the few people I have come to strike up a true dialogue with in such a short space of time. His photos have a quiet old school feel to them that I love, and they are always so well thought out. His film series are a true pleasure. Don's comments are always insightful and it is with honour that I count him as a friend."

"I don't really know where to begin. Don is the type of photographer that turns a place like Flickr into more than just a forum – he turns it into a true community. He is enthusiastic, thoughtful, genuine, human and quirky, not just in his outstanding photography, but also in his comments on others' work as well. Seeing his photos and reading his comments sincerely brightens my day.

I can't fully express how much I appreciate the sense of community, caring, and adventure that Don brings to the table. I cannot recommend his photos more. A million thanks, Don: you inspire me so very much."

    Terrapin Dawg says:

"Don modestly refers to his photography skills as "just winging it." Don't be fooled. He knows exactly what he's doing. And he's been doing this since he was a teenager in the 80's. Just take a look at his FG series, a remarkable set of old film shots that highlight his travels around North Carolina along with trips to Florida and Athens. His new work is just as impressive, and each photograph has a distinctive shiphome quality to it. I'm lucky to count Don as a contact and hope I'll have the same passion for photography that he has when I'm his age."

"Whereas I feel I am spewing forth too many photos of Georgia in a frantic attempt to cover it all, shiphome's photostream is a delightful affair. In addition to great composition and exposure, rich colors and tones warm both the image and my heart, and aside from being very well presented, the photos also seem carefully selected. Much like a good glass of wine, you want to pause and savor each moment as an image meets your eye. Checking in on this stream is a visual delight I look forward to each day...and Don's observant and kind comments on both his own and other people's photos are an added bonus."

"I think Don is a bit of a fraud. His profile would have you believe that he finds the creative process difficult and tortuous ... he seems to find beauty, warmth and wisdom in the world around him, then portray it in his images, with ease. I'm grateful for his careful, thoughtful comments and more grateful that he counts me among his contacts so I can watch his vision unfold."

"An American of the sort that makes me proud, Shiphome is a Renaissance man whose mission to go beyond snapshots into the right side of his brain has obviously succeeded. He is smart and curious and kind and good, and from half a country away, I'd stake my claim on that. I'd love to meet his wife."
