Stephen F. who?
Located in the heart of East Texas' piney woods region, Stephen F. Austin State University was founded in 1923 as a teachers' college. Initially, it boasted a total enrollment of 270 students, each of whom paid $12 tuition for each semester. Today, the university has over 10,000 students and offers a diverse curriculum of more than 80 undergraduate majors and 120 areas of study.
SFA and The Commons
The Ralph W. Steen Library holds a wealth of unique resources that serve both the SFA campus and the general community of Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. Through the efforts of the library's Digital Projects Department and the East Texas Research Center, these resources have been digitized and organized in a database and the archives so that they might be accessible to a larger audience. By joining the Commons and adding our collections to the wealth of information already on Flickr, we hope to find new audiences, new friends, and new insights into our shared histories.
About TIDES
TIDES (Teaching, Images & Digital Experiences) is a collaborative project managed by the Digital Projects Department at SFA which works to digitize and make widely available important rare and diverse primary source materials by forming partnerships with schools, museums and libraries in both Texas and Mexico. TIDES also provides free K-12 resources, including lesson plans, virtual expeditions, interviews, college readiness materials, and ongoing support from a responsive staff of librarians and specialists.
The East Texas Research Center
The ETRC collects, preserves, and provides physical and virtual access to East Texas’ unique cultural history. The Research Center was designated by the Forest History Foundation as an official North American Forest History Repository in 1959. In addition, the Research Center serves as a Regional Historical Resource Depository (RHRD) for the State of Texas and houses the inactive records for eight East Texas counties. The ETRC also is responsible for managing SFA’s Records Management Program and caring for the University’s archives. ETRC outreach efforts include presentations to the University, East Texas, and professional archival communities. Got a question? Email asketrc@sfasu.edu for answers.
