Hello everyone, my name is Sekana Radovic. I was born in Podgorica, Montenegro, Europe. I am a member of the Applied Art Association of Montenegro and a member of the International Federation of Artists & National Artist's Union of Russia. I lived in Cairo, Egypt from 1990-1999. I am currently residing in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Exhibitions:
-Spanish Cultural Center; Cairo, Egypt, 1993
-Orient Express Gallery; Cairo, Egypt, 1997
-Center for Modern Art (Perjanicki Dom); Podgorica, Montenegro, 2000
-Arc Gallery; Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2004
-Navy Pier; Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2005
-Serbian TV; Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2005
-Congress Plaza Hotel; Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2006
-Cook County Treasurer's Office, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 2008
And several other group exhibitions.
My art is influenced by three major factors:
1. Classic and Modern European tradition, that I grew up in.
2. Egyptian and late Greco-Roman art that I become very closely involved with during the eight years I spent in Cairo, Egypt.
3. The national catastrophe and the decade long civil war in the former Yugoslavia.
As a young girl I always had a passion for art and I would draw anything got into my hands. I was always fascinated with the process of art creation, trying to penetrate into it's secret, being guided with my sensibility, and powerful perception from outside impressions, as well as my openness toward people. I am mostly impressed with art of the Middle Ages, which personally appeals to me as the most superior form of modern art. I am especially touched by the Byzantine abstractness of faces and figures, which appear to levitate from the icons of Orthodox churches, where there is meaning and greatness in the figures, as in a child's drawing, when the child can still observe with the heart.
The last ten years I spent on the development of my artistic epic, which containts the subject matter of mother, family, and woman, as well as firm and unchangeable values which belongs to the spiritual sphere, which are out of reach to the physical eyes, and can only be expressed by the language of symbols, where I used a special method of creation resulting from peace, contemplation, and prayer.
The process of creating my art becomes one of the religious acts and a unique spiritual expirience, which makes me absolutely free in my artistic expression and imagination supported with my personal feelings.
Others about me:
"...her comments on the students' work were perspective and contructive, but the opportunity for them to see a number of works by a mature artist in a style very different from anything we had yet studied, and to hear her well-developed thoughts on both her painting and her methods of expressive power and wealth of art historical influence assimilated through her unique personal history as a citizen of the former Yugoslavia and sojourner in Cairo for 8 years."
-Carolyn Shafer, instructor at the Lansing Community College, Michigan, USA.
"...The artistic advice of Svetlana Radovic is on the path of undefined, never ending space, which exists in between dreams and reality. The world of visible phenomena's is in reality a forthcoming materials used in the representation are put in the exhibition of metaphoric language of the painting, whose inner world is melted into magic awaiting answers and miracles. Nevertheless, it is carved in the atmosphere of undiscovered peace, which with it's psychological components, creates an environment filled with peace and joy."
-Dragan Radovanovic, director of the Center for Modern Arts, Podgorica, Montenegro.
"...I've seen the works of Mrs. Radovic several times. Each time, her works confirmed my first impression: that she is a mature painter, with at once daring and sophisticated concept, and with high talent. Her works undoubtedly present a unique worldview. Even the segments of the demonstration of profound knowledge of European, Byzantine, and Arabic artistic tradition are well suited to the whole and represent a genuine creative achievement rather than a reiteration of the already-seen patterns."
-Branislav Mirkovic, artist and former art critic in Lebanon, Ohio, USA.
"...Ms. Radovic has a completely different style from the styles we are all used to seeing; her paintings are unique, and challenging in their own way."
-Cherif Loutfi, owner of the Orient Express Gallery in Cairo, Egypt.
"I love the many layers of style and meaning contained in this piece. It is like a latter day religious icon and also like a page from a modern newspaper. It also has deeply feminist elements in both the image and the title. This is one of the most original pieces I have seen on the dArt site recently. Chagal meets Corot."
-David Baker, artist and professor from the United Kingdom; commenting on painting, "Icon".
"...Ms. Radovic's art expresses a modern sensibility and appealing combination of colors. The stories of basic human relationships are given in a very refreshing, feminine way. Her works reminds me of a large range of artists such as Miro, Kandinski, Klint, and Picasso."
-Dan Narigon, owner of Deck the Walls, in Mason, Ohio, USA.

"Often the best are rarely here amongst us, or just are dead
somewhere far away. This is the case Sekana Radovic, who had
been breastfed by Montenegrin milk, bathed in the waters of
Lake Skadar and the Adriatic Sea and covered with the Mt.
Lovćen tunicate and the smell of Cetinje and Podgorica
rivers.
These pearls of heritage and riches, she had taken with her
to the greatest civilization that once stood, Egypt and the
recently spreading its wings, the United States of America.
Sekana made a rainbow in between herself and the two. Sekana
is the Sun, the Moon and the Star in this world of art. She is
enthusiastic, smart, talented and beautiful.
Her art is a step forward, which documents a complex world
of emotions and thoughts. These are strong, independent, yet
fine and infinitely gentle recordings of the soul which
leave us breathless. I consider her one of the most
significant contemporary artists in Montenegro and the rest
of the world.

Cesto najbolji nisu tu, kraj nas. Ili su mrtvi ili su tamo, negdje daleko. To je slucaj Sekane Radovic, zadojene crnogorskim mlijekom, okupane vodama skadarskog jezera i jadranskog mora, zagrnuta plastom Lovcena, mirisom Cetinja i rijekama Podgorice. Tu sveukupnost i naslijedje je odnijela u najvece civilizacije proslosti- Egipat i sadasnjosti SAD- i napravila dugu izmedju njih- sebe. Sekana je Sunce, Mjesec i Zvijezda u svijetu umjetnosti. Zanosna, pametna, talentovana, prelijepa.

"Having spent several years in what was then Yugoslavia, Montenegro, or Crna Gora, will always remain fondly in my memory -- days and nights in Cetinje and Budva, enjoying the local rakja, Njegusi cheese, kajmak and olives, all the more enjoyed because it was in the company of local artists.
So it was with great pleasure that I came across Sekana's work on Flickr -- a magnificent portfolio that needs many visits to really appreciate her work to the full.
This is one cool Montenegrin lady, who offers us on one hand the charms and challenges of cubism, and on the other the eye of an extremely talented photographer.
I have not yet worked out her moves from Podgorica (Titograd in my time!!!) to Cairo and then to Chicago, but I am sure it will all become apparent in her work in the fullness of time.
Thank you Sekana, for all the enjoyment, and I (and many others I am sure) look forward to following your work for a long time to come.
And with that I will crack open a bottle (alas, not Vranac) and drink to your health. Djivili!!!"16th September, 2007

"Sekana Radovic keeps amazing me with her "obra", all the shapes throw to my eyes the humild and concreet point of view of a beautiful woman, the love for her family, and all the "icon gestor's" (that is the literal translation of how we call it here, excuse me for the minor vocabulary knowledge) investigation and composing she sincerely posts on her work."

"Sekana's work has really awakened something in me.
I love how she melts together her obvious early 1900's european influences( shiele, klee, picasso, Modigliani,,,) the Byzantine background and the colours from Egypt to make the all thing uniquely Sekana's.
You are incredible and your work deserves to be seen by the all world,
An entusiastic Domenico"25th September, 2006
