Alone again and my own best friend, is this the winter of our discontent or just a cold shoulder from you? / Today I threw my yearbooks away cuz if it’s one more thing that I don’t need it's another reminder of what I used to be / In the back of his car in the afterglow of the afterprom they were the Young Americans / Still hurting over you and you're so happy / In their light, that plane-bank lurch in my gut; twist my spine, every time I sit and watch them kiss, kiss, kiss / Sometimes you can’t get by on what you’ll be / 40-and-then-some and they’re still so bored; I may have to grow up someday but I ain’t ever growing old / Sometimes I feel like life’s a revolver: five ways to get by, a bullet to fear; the holes in my pockets speak volumes on trust / Marry me, save me from my life; trade my youth for apron strings and faith / And I’m fallen from my grace and further from my place, lost as all my love / Rather be dead than stoop to pretense and patronage / I’m so tired of waiting for those little things in life you keep saying are going to save me — hold me now / In the waning hours I owe in the arms of the storm I’ll be warm; guess I’m true, darling to you / It's never gonna happen for me cuz happy endings only happen on T.V. / A curt "Goodbye" before you drive away with him and with my life like in Ric Ocasek’s rainy night / They say I’m a "sport" for waiting they say that the truth is never blind they say I’m lost but hated they say that I’ll find out in time but I know it’s a lie / And there they were like an emerald star that could split the sky, two young lovers in the night.
