I grew up in the town of Dieppe in New Brunswick, Canada. Living well outside the Moncton city limits (at that time), I developed an interest in the natural sciences in general, and in life sciences in particular. I attended the Université de Moncton and earned a Bachelor’s degree (Honour’s Biochemistry) in 1991, and a Master’s degree (Biochemistry) in 1993. After a brief teaching appointment at the Université de Moncton, I moved to Halifax where I attended Dalhousie University, earning a Ph.D. degree in Evolutionary Biology in 2002. I now study the molecular genetics of cancer. The study of cancer has shown me that life is not conforming, but is amazingly diverse; that life is not fastidious, but rather uncritical; and that life is not fragile, but is remarkably robust. These observations fuel my interest in all aspects of biology. I have recently taken up a great interest in photography, which seems to be the perfect medium to record life and the earth in all their grandure. Although my interest in photography was fueled initially by a desire to document life, the process of photography has become a passion in itself. I am now striving to learn and improve all aspects of photography. I am a member of the Picture This group of Flickr. The group suggests monthly assignments, which force one to think of, visualize and photograph subjects they may not normally. The group critiques are a great way to learn and improve; It's all about learning. Thanks for droping by, Cheers, Mark
