He gave me some good advice way back when and it was well received: "try to carry around a sketch book where ever you go, so you can either write down your ideas & thoughts or quickly sketch what it is in front of you" circa 1992.
  
  I have not been in the same (art) room with this guy in years, but all of his recent work is taking me back to the good ol' days when anything outside those four walls seemed blurry.

  "Imagine you are standing inside of a drawing inside of William Schaff's mind. At your feet you see tiny curled shavings of black clay, delicate bits of cut red paper, spilled paint, exacto blades and tumble weeds of dog hair. You look up and your face is brushed with the layered horrors and wonders of history, hanging and waving toward you in long paper sheets of dark reds, white, and muted browns. Step to the edges and you can see bird's wings fluttering, flowers opening to the sun, and life singing it's praises to God. In the air is the sound of stringed instruments, a trumpet, an accordian cranking, and always the low hum of the dead begging to never be forgotten.
