«The world is a kind of book of which one has read but the first page when one has seen only one's own country. I have leafed over a pretty large number of these pages and have found them all equally bad. But this enquiry has not been unprofitable to me. I used to hate my native land. All the impertinences of the various peoples among whom I have lived have reconciled me to it. even had I drawn from my travels no other benefit than that, I should not regret either the cost or the fatigues of them» (Fougeret de Monbron, Le Cosmopolite, ou, le citoyen du monde, London, 1753).
