I'm a freelance entomologist and lecturer, formerly senior invertebrate ecologist and then senior education officer for English Nature/Natural England, and my main interest these days is communicating wildlife and wild places, especially via insects and other invertebrates, to kids, students and those who work with, and influence them.

PHOTOGRAPHY
I supply wildlife (especially invertebrate) species and habitat pictures widely for publication, sometimes charging, sometimes not, depending on the organization and use. However, I do like to keep a record of how my pictures are used, so if you want use anything from my Flickr collections, do please get in touch.
More of my pictures are visible on the Arkive www.arkive.org/ ,UKBAP www.ukbap.org.uk/species.aspx and www.ukbap.org.uk/habitats.aspx and Coleopterists' www.coleopterist.org.uk/ websites.
See below for a list of publishers and organizations who have used my photos.
LECTURING/TRAINING/COURSEWORK
I have many 'set' lectures - again sometimes for expenses, sometimes for a fee, depending on the nature of the group - see end of my profile for a list of available titles. These can be tailored to requirements and I can discuss new titles.
FIELD EVENTS
Training and field leader in various invertebrate and other natural history field-craft skills and field identification events and courses.
CHILDREN'S MINIBEAST SAFARIS
(all ages, right up to PhD level!)
Land, freshwater and sea-shore. I would normally only charge incurred expenses for children's events. I have been CRB checked for working with children, but might need rechecking for working with other organizations unless individual checking comes in as predicted in 2010.
TV & RADIO
I have undertaken extensive TV & Radio work, mainly with the BBC, having presented invertebrate and other Natural History pieces on, among others, The Countryside Hour, Langley Country, Countyfile, the Really Wild Show, and Radio 4's Natural History Programme and Home Planet. Special appearance on the Christmas Day edition of 'Auntie's Bloomers'!
LECTURES
Standard 'off the shelf' lectures include:-
Of Cabbages and Kings. Lundy: Conservation of its Cabbage and its Beetles
- where I cover island history and wildlife, endemic plants & insects, alien invasives, the importance of taxonomy, molecular genetics, island biogeography through a series of (ongoing) projects that I worked (and still work) on with English Nature/ Natural England.
The Times they are a-changin' - invertebrate conservation and climate change.
A perhaps somewhat disturbing but probably realistic view of future priorities.
Will there ever be another David Attenborough? whither the next generation of Naturalists?
What the opportunities and barriers are to a young person wanting to become a naturalist in the 21st century? – comparing/contrasting with the opportunities/barriers that there were for a 1950s-born case study – me!
Azores to Arctic – Wildlife travels in search of the Lundy Cabbage
A simple wildlife travelogue of places my wife & I and my various students have travelled to, trying to discover the origins of the Lundy Island endemics. Brief introduction to Lundy & its wildlife, followed by sections on Spain, Morocco, Azores & Canaries, Denmark, Sweden & arctic Norway. Mainly wildflowers and entomology with a few birds and reptiles tossed in for good measure.
Williwaws & Wildlife hunting aliens in Sub-Antarctic South Georgia.
A yacht-based 6-week entomological/botanical expedition travelogue to South Georgia looking for alien species colonising the island via human agency and the effects of climate change. Expedition logistics, South Atlantic wildlife (wildflowers, seals, albatrosses & other birds, cetaceans), South Georgia history & scenery. Results and interpretation. Hot off the press - this one is still developing as results keep coming in.
also see link to South Georgia Expedition report at bottom of page.
