Dear Friends,

Working children are the objects of extreme exploitation in terms of toiling for long hours for minimal pay. Their work conditions are especially severe, often not providing the stimulation for proper physical and mental development.

Many children may have to work in order to attend school or financing their family members, so abolishing child labor may only hinder their education.

There must be an economic change in the condition of a struggling family to free a child from the responsibility of working. Family subsidies can help provide this support.

Drug dependence is one of the more serious problem affecting many street children. Children may pick up the habit because it gives them a high degree of satisfaction.
It becomes an escape from the harsh realities of life, from the disappointments and frustration of their daily lives and they become hook.

Fortunate are those who helped in time. Others may sink deeper and deeper into the mire of degradation and sometimes death becomes the only way out.

Why do we need to reach out to these children ?

They are our future generation and our country depends on the next generation. We need recognize the rights of the children. And God loves the children.

I helped to found a street children shelter home / foundation ( Yayasan Pendidikan Ramah Anak Bangsa )with a group of local volunteers in Indonesia. It was extremely difficult to set up such facility, especially in Makassar the capital city of South Sulawesi where corruption and injustice are there to stay.

But I am happy with what we have been doing for the children. I hope my photos and video could represent all the voices of these children. May God protect them and cover them with His love.

I have been playing the role as mentor / guardian for many years supporting up to 12 kids. One of them made it to college and also a very bright kid with great future. The rest doing not that bad but still very young and cute :-)

Photography is a media that I rely a lot to capture the children's emotion, situation and their working environment.

By the way Mio Cade means Kitten in the dialect/language of Makassarese :-) If you browse through my SET on 'My Children' you would see most of their faces.

I am still very new in DSLR. My last photography assignment was in year 2000 before turning to video/audio. It was just in June 2008 that I came back to photography. I love both camera and video.

My mission in photography is to ‘force’ you to look at the reality of life; the reality of poverty, injustice and corruption that affects many in the 3rd world countries. The worst abuser of the poor little children is the one who knows about their situation but not coming forward to help.

My favorite subjects are always the street, the working environment and low light photography. My all time favourite photographer is Werner Bishof. I really admire his work about people.

Through sharing, I hope I could gain more friends and supports.

God Bless You !

I am really happy to have you in my friends' list and hopefully one day we can say cheers to eachother in real life ...peace & respect man!"

"How do I describe the impact that his photography has on me? Often, it's beyond words. Stunning captures of happy lives ... of sad lives ... of REAL lives. Not a posed world, but instead we see the reality of the world around him. His photos tell us stories. His commentary makes us laugh and cry. He is a true photographer with a heart bigger than we can imagine."

"Mio Cade... Ini kali pertama Eriani menulis testimonial di filickr. Eriani suka dengan gambar-gambar Mio kerana banyak mengambarkan kehidupan sebenar kanak-kanak yang kurang bernasib baik. Walau begitu, hidup mesti diteruskan juga. Mereka tetap tabah mengharungi hidup dengan segala kekurangan. Terima kasih kerana menjadikan eriani sensitif dengan keadaan itu.

Eriani adalah pengunjung setia flickr Mio setiap hari.

Your photo are great. Your the one of my favorite photographers on flickr. Congratulations."

"Mio Cade is one of my favourite flickr photographers - and a good bloke, as we say Down Under...

His photojournalism and travel series have really helped bring South East Asia alive to me - he captures the gritty realism of life there better than anybody I've met, along with exposing the injustice of poverty endemic to the region.

His photos are also not simply thought-provoking (occasionally heart-breaking) but always entertaining as well. Thank you for sharing everything with us!"

"Thomas ... I don't need a lot of words to express myself according to your photography. It is simply "noble". Each of your images has a tremendous soul. The famous words of the great photographer - Robert Capa - are always in my mind while looking at your pictures : "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough !" . You are extremely close ...
    With respect and admiration,

"Words are not enough to describe how beautiful your works are. I could sense the emotions in each of your photographs and i hope through this medium which is photography you will be able to shed some light on the poverty and injustices that is happening in several countries specially on the situations of hapless children that are born from poor families.
I admire the way you put your words into photographs as if you are leading a crusade by the power of your shots.

    Keep shooting my friend!"

"Thomas, I think most of your testimonials state what there is to be said, about your photography, your person and all that this represents. After having visited your stream regularly since the day I heard from you about how my own images inspired you, I can do nothing other than agree with them.

On browsing through your “My faves” on Flickriver (through the link available on this page), one cannot help feeling anything but humbleness towards the people and the situations you so observingly present through your exceptional collection of images. Your views of the many suffering children, who are doomed to fight against the strong currents of an indifferent world against them, are like polished gems hidden from the rich man’s world.
How much poorer we would be without them!

    Man Him says:

"Thomas is a gifted photographer and social activist who forces us to confront images and realities that are challenging to many. He shows us a world many of us have never seen, and perhaps one that challenges us. I am sure that he does this to urge us to action that will help those less fortunate inhabitants of our planet. I applaud the work that he is doing to help the unfortunate poor and to bring to us the realization that we all need to help. He is living proof that one person can make a difference."

    johntan80 says:

"A photojournalist and an advocate in the best sense of the word, Thomas is fascinated with people, especially less fortunate children who work hard in all parts of the world. From street children struggling to pull through each day in the hostile streets to child laborers digging out plastics from dump sites in Asia, Thomas’ lens captures the beauty in his subjects' gritty reality. His portraits and street photos are touching and perceptive.

Thomas passionately believed in the integrity of his subjects and the photographs that portrayed them. He produced some of the most memorable images that I can recall. His image is real, full of emotion and feelings. Only one word can describe that – Soulfulness!

I admire his gift from God. Thomas is unique. His images are beautifully portrayed yet stirred so much emotion in us. It is like a great symphony master piece where the maestro would bring us to the very peak of joy then falls suddenly all the way to emptiness, darkness and started asking why? Why? Why? …then there is hope again at the end of the turmoil when we acknowledge that the world needs us to stand united to combat corruption, injustice and unfairness.

Thomas is a perceptive street photographer with a sharp sense of advocacy, sensitivity to the human condition, and an affinity for children. It is almost impossible not to be depressed after looking at his work! We may ignore looking at his images but unfortunately sub-consciously they would stay in our hearts until we do something about the situation.

"Some very good photos and stories here! We all could learn a thing or two from this photo stream! Mio Cade's message here is of great importance - much more important than Presidents, Professional sport players and the likes of Hoolywood! The people living their lives the best they can on any given day in dirt poor poverty are what matter the most in this wold - until the rest of humanity figures this out, sadly, things will never improve.

    Good work, Mio Cade!"

    "爱•勇气•希望

    你面对的方向 就是希望的方向
    抬起头 天空就会亮起来

    你站起来的地方 就是勇气升起的地方
    向前走 道路就会显现

    你的心是尚未标注地址的坐标
    我把手放在胸前 就能找到

    爱的光 化成云彩
    从天上 飘来人间

The author photo journal always show loves, courage and hope despite the stark reality of poverty, injustice and corruption that affects many in the 3rd world countries. Thomas’s ability to bring those pictures to life clearly proves that he has the love, courage and hope when capturing those memorable pictures in a very difficult environment.

His artistic talent and creativity also reflected well in many of the most beautiful photos in his journal. His intensity in photography discussion and generosity in sharing his photography experience only adds to your desire into wanting to learn more about photography.

Always look forward to your new masterpiece."

He is talented, sincere, genuine, kind, helpful, humble and a rare unpredictable gem. Thomas’s work is photography with creativity, uniqueness and soul. One can feel his warmth, humanism and ability in structuring communication in each of his moving, strong and powerful works.

"Tom's collection of photo's showing the plight of the poor children of Indonesia is only a small sampling of those he has seen and helped in this country. I had the honor of traveling with him to Indonesia to see for myself the numbers of children having to labor long and hard hours in order to provide a little assistance to their families and the work he has done to help so many children and families. Hopefully more outstanding photos of the children of Indonesia will follow and move others to help."
