Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is Victoria’s state archival authority, established under the Public Records Act 1973.

Photographs in our collection
Among PROV’s records are hundreds of thousands of photographs. Most government departments, past and
present, have taken photographs to document their activities, achievements and work in progress; for the promotion of government programs, publicity and marketing; and to illustrate government publications. These photographs are more than just a record of government activities and official employees: they provide a window into the life of ordinary Victorians.

The enormous photographic collection created by the Public Transport Corporation, for example, includes images not only of railway stations and locomotives, but also of people and places, floods, fires, important historical events, buildings and street scenes.

Dates for the photographs have been provided where possible, but often this information is not available in the original records. Similarly, we are rarely able to identify the photographer. If you have any information about any of the photos please let us know! And if you have a favourite record you would like to see up on our flickr page drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.
