I am an ol' liberal dawg and I have been teaching Social Studies in my home town of Corpus Christi, Texas for more than 30 years.
I have a fourteen year old daughter. She lives in Colorado with my ex-wife. I drive to Colorado twice a summer and we have a blast during our trips.
Our trips usually involve a stop in Alamosa, Colorado and Red River, New Mexico to visit relatives.
There are also many other places we usually visit:
Rifle Ponds on the Colorado River is a great place to hike and skip rocks. It is also a very popular local fishing hole - so be careful where you skip the rocks. The fishermen get very upset. If you visit Rifle, be sure to have dinner at Fiesta Guadelajara - its a wonderful Mexican Restaurant. The Base Camp is a great place to have breakfast.
Grizzly Creek in Glennwood Canyon on the Colorado River is a great place to look for rocks and skip them across the river.
We also like to stop in Eagle Colorado and stroll along the Eagle River and visit the Eagle Museum. The Eagle Diner is a great place to have breakfast.
U. S. 24 is a spectacular drive and there are many places to stop along the way. I like stopping and viewing the old Ghost Town of Gilman, Colorado. There is also Homestake which is a roadside park along the headwaters of the Eagle River. It too is a great place to walk and skip rocks.
Leadville is an old mining town. There is a great antique shop in an old hardware store that is wonderful to walk through. Once occupied by the Western Hardware store it is now called Western Hardware Antiques. Leadville is a great little town to drive around because of the many old Victorian houses that are still standing.
Buena Vista is a beautiful little town surrounded by snow capped mountains. I like stopping for ice cream and walking through the antique shops.
Villa Grove is a tiny community sittin' on top of a mountain. It is located on U. S. 285. Populated by a bunch of old hippies, its fun to stop for a sandwich and look at the locally produced tye dye or batique or pottery and other art in the Sangre de Cristo Cafe and the Villa Grove General Store. The folks at the Sangre de Cristo Cafe are very friendly.
