Raised and still currently live in Richland Washington. I am Married to my beautiful wife Kim and have two sons of my own Connor and Chase along with two step-kids Kaycee and Hayden. Since the mid-eighties, I have been fascinated with sports and landscape photography. I got my start using my dad camera until my parents bought me my first semi-professional camera for my birthday. My fascination stems from multiple sources - the excitement of being in the action of the race or in the calm of nature that is remote and even sometimes rarely seen. In addition to shooting photos my primary job is a professional truck driver for Con-way Freight. I have one multiple Washington State truck driving championships and have finished in the top five at National truck driving events twice so far with a 4th place in 2007 and a 2nd place in 2009.
Self-taught in photography, I began to document these events that so fascinated me over half a decade ago. I’ve always been drawn to the sports type events, and my work has been focused primarily for the last 5 years to Kart racing. I have visited many stockcar race venues throughout the Northwest and a select few southern locations in Arizona and Nevada for local stockcar races and a few Nascar events. My interest and my families interest in stockcar racing have been around since 1965 when my Uncle John and my Dad raced in the Winston West Series. As the years past and my older brother John (Johnny to me) became of age to race at our local stockcar track (Tri-City Raceway) in the bomber class in the mid-80’s, this is when I started my passion of photography to racing. It continued with my Dad racing in the Tri-Track Series and Northwest Tour from the late-80’s to early-90’s. Then followed up with my younger brother Kelly racing in the Mini-Stock class in the mid-90’s until he joined the Air force to defend the greatest country on earth, “America.”
Unfortunately, a couple of years later after Kelly joined the Air force Tri-City Raceway shut down and has not been a been open for a full race season since. This is when I decided to do more landscape style photograph for the next few years. Trying to avoid the larger cost of a stockcar and travel expense to other tracks Kelly began racing karts at the local kart track (Tri-City Kart Club) in 2007. Kelly also introduced and are racing his daughter Lexi and his step-son Jaden. Within the past couple of years John also got back into racing thru his son Garrett. So with all the family back into racing I have now got a good reason to be out at the local track. This is when I turned my passion back to racing and have been a fixture at the track for the past 5 years.
My older brother John also assists me in my passion in photography. John is a Correctional Officer for the Washington State Department of Corrections so when he has an race day off and his son Garrett is on an off weekend and is not racing you will see John out their capturing some of the best moments out at the track along with me since 2010, and believe me he has caught some awesome action shots!, which I’m a little jealous of because he has been only doing this for a couple years. (now its time he got his own equipment)
The primary purpose of my work is to create a living record of my families racing and of as many of the others racing families that share the same lifestyle as my family. Beyond the simple racing around the track photo, I strive to create images which captures “more then just a moment but a memory.” The stories at the track can always be talked about, I just try to capture with my camera the best moments to back up there memories.
I have decided it was time to make a web page on flickr.com to share all of my photos that I have taken out at the track so that all the racers and their families could enjoy. Sometimes to look back at memories or to share their life with others that may be to far away to see the event at the track. With this I have also lifted the restriction to download the photos at this time so that anyone could upload and use for personal use (share on facebook, or to upload and have it printed.). All I have asked for anyone using the photos is that the be tagged with photo by me and/or linked back to my photo page on flickr.com.
I have recently bought some new equipment and am really looking forward to capture the best images in kart racing in the northwest. If you see me at the track come say hi and point me in the direction of what you may want, I’ll will do our best to capture it for you. Enjoy the photos and I look forward to seeing you at the track.
