I've always been fascinated by photographs. Cameras capture images that my eyes don't see. They seem to transcend into another world. Every image I make is a surprise to me. I try to visualize what it will look like, and I'm always wrong. A good photograph can do many things. If it triggers an emotion, it's good, regardless of the technical aspects. If it holds my attention, it's good (thanks for this lesson Silas). If I find myself captivated by an image for more than five seconds, I'll add it as a favorite.

Photography has become much more important to me in recent years as I struggle to maintain my sight. I lost sight in one eye for three months in 2006. Damned diabetes. Every image I see and make is now much more important to me, except maybe for some. I've seen images all would gladly not see: the image of blood spreading through my eye and making the world dissappear, the image of a vacuum cutter inside my eye hoovering up all the debris, or the image of the world with a frozen eye -- octo-vision!.

I can't seem to get enough of the visual world now. I'm working hard to keep it. My A1C hovers around 6%, my diet is on the high side of healthy, and I'm dropping the weight 34 years of shooting insulin have added.
