J A Mortram's photostream |

For the last 18 months together with people on or far beyond the outskirts of my local Market Towns community I have been recording through collaborative environmental portraiture, audio and video interviews coupled with straight documentary shoots their life stories and memories, musings, hopes and struggles.
I do this with a passion and belief that the photographs we can make have a weight and longevity beyond our time here, have an ability to communicate a story long after the characters have departed, they are time capsules awaiting discovery.
These are moments of daily endurance that in a generation will have passed forever.
I work as a full time Carer in my families home and at the end of the week there is no budget for any photographic work. Most all of my equipment is borrowed and all of my shoots are completed in free time away from my duties at home.
Portraits from the Market Town series are multi award winning and have been published in print & book format worldwide. Market Town has no end date, it's a project I will work on forever, constantly updating how I present the stories via essays, interviews, articles, stories, portraits, mixed media exhibitions and a series of books.

"J A Mortram
jim
holy shit
and it is true holy
and it is the actual shit
this is visual acuity
like an unwrapped
bare razor.
acuity
with a beating
weeping bleeding
and tearful
heart.
this is a hymn
a supplication
a muscular homage
and an exceptional
force of description.
this work is important.
important. that's one
powerful fucking word.
fitting here perfectly.
you look at this stream
you lose your own coddled
warmth and labelled love.
you start to think.
ticking over. ticking.
over.
thinking.
that is art.
a photographer.
a describer.
a teller of that
which needs telling.

"When Jim asked me to comment on his flickr page, I thought I would likely be looking at a beginner who wanted feedback. To my delight and surprise, I have found what others have found in his work-- humanity, classic formalism, compassion and originality. How refreshing to find someone who, while obviously talanted and accomplished, still seeks to improve by soliciting the opinions of his peers. Bravo . . ."

spysgrandson--thanks for the half million hits says:
"It would be easy to engage in lengthy discourse about what this artist/photographer/writer shares with us. Instead, I will allow myself the privilege of only a few remarks. Jim is Bob Dylan with a camera. His powerful images and words reveal the both the gritty and grand elements of the human experience. His stark black and whites show us not only the painfully finite nature of our time here but also the potential for transcendence--for finding that glimmer of hope that always exists in the human spirit, no matter how well masked. I am honored to know him and in awe of his skill and elegance."

"I was thinking really long how to start... how to express what i feel when i visit Jim's photostream...
It is simply honest, real and beautiful gallery of simple, real and beautiful people.
Every picture tells a story, which stays with you for a very long time.
You don't only can see his photos but also listen to them. Jim portrays atmosphere and mood so convincingly...
I'm so glad that i found Him here on flickr.
Thank You for your amazing photos."27th December, 2008

"I don't write lot of testimonial, maybe bcz when you know from sometime a photographer -in true or in flickr - it's not very useful to write one, they know what you think.
but like i don't know J A Mortram i can do it :)
it's flickr: you open the "global photojournalism" pool and you see a great portrait -in fact the best of the first page-, you go to the mainstream and see perfect B&W like those which were done by the street master's.
angles are perfect, monochromes wonderfuls...i will wait to seen the next ones with urgeness !
i love punk and skin culture and i'm in love with your portraits bcz they make me wonder of how some of those youth i shoot could become in some years.
portrait of "beautiful" persons are too boring, i prefer people with caracter and background.
thank again for your work and i will wait to see what come next ;D"2nd August, 2008
