Patrick McDonald’s interest in photography began while working in Yellowstone National Park the summer before he started college. His interest in the outdoors brought him to Humboldt State University in Northern California. While attending HSU, Patrick discovered his passion for photographing landscapes, particularly of the Northern California coast. He took several photojournalism classes and eventually became the dark room technician for the journalism department. A large photo sale to HSU provided the stimulus to switch over to a large format 4x5 camera.

During his last year of college, he attended Northern Arizona University on National Student Exchange with his future wife, Hilary. Living in the southwest opened many new photographic opportunities. Patrick became a printing technician for a prestigious professional darkroom, where he was responsible for creating fine art Ilfochrome prints for some of the top landscape photographers in the country. This experience gave Patrick a critical eye for printmaking. For several years Patrick was a photographer and digital imaging technician for the Bilby Research Center at Northern Arizona University. He nows works as a web designer at NAU. Patrick continues to explore the little-known treasures of the West with his 4x5 camera and homemade 6x17 panoramic camera. He lives with his wife, Hilary, and dog, Maya, in Flagstaff, Arizona.
