Peter Tabuns already had a long record of change.before becoming one of the newest members of the NDP team After winning a by-election in 2006 and re-election in 2007, Peter has brought fresh new ideas to Queen’s Park on creating jobs while fighting climate change; keeping people safe from toxins; and integrating new Canadians into our economy.

As energy and environment critic, Peter is leading the change to a new energy economy, in part thanks to his half decade of experience as Executive Director of Greenpeace Canada. He also pioneered energy efficiency in Toronto in the 1990s. For years, Peter has broken down old barriers between unions and environmentalists; south versus north. He brings people together around new ideas that create good jobs, cut emissions and help us catch up to new energy economies around the world.

Before joining Greenpeace, and increasing its profile, Peter was a City Councillor.and Deputy Mayor of Toronto. At city hall, he helped keep valuable services public and was ahead of his time in championing smoke-free restaurants and bars, an initiative which later spread through out North America. As a consequence workers who once experienced a 50 per cent higher risk of developing lung cancer now work in a much safer environment and countless lives may have been saved.

He’s also worked in health care, doing government relations for the Ontario Nurses Association; and early in life, took an active role in the organizing drive, by the Canadian Labour Congress, to unionize white-collar workers during the 1970’s.
Peter lives in Toronto with his partner Shawn Kerwin and his son, Anton. Shawn is an accomplished costume designer and university professor who’s won many awards for her work while Anton is currently studying environmental law at Osgoode Hall.
