"You learn something new everyday" is a well known old saying but, nonetheless very true. In August 2009 I set out to post one of my natural history photographs each day to Flickr and, in so doing, do some research as necessary to enable me to write something meaningful about the subject in that photo.

I am not a good photographer so I hope that what my photos lack in quality they make up for in interest!

I started 'nature watching' back in 1977. Initially I was consumed by birds but over time my interest blossomed and I am now fascinated by all aspects of nature from mammals to fungi and everything in between. I have been using a 'close-up' lens filter on my camera and that has produced some photos that enlarge and reveal the otherwise hidden glory of the subject, especially true of lichens and mosses for example and of course insects.

I am now retired and so now, in my later years, I want to try and pass on some of the knowledge l have accumulated to others and I hope ths little Flickr contribution will help do that. I also give talks and leads walks and I am planning a 'beginners guide to nature': a ten week course.

On top of everything else I also run my own website called the Nature of Dorset and you will be welcome if you decide to pay me a visit!

This 'blog' on Flickr is dedicated to the memory of David and Madge Goodall who taught me so much. Their love of nature, their enthusiasm, their energy and their immense knowledge (as well as being really nice people) lives on in the lives of others they touched.
