Stéfano Pérez Tonella. Italian freelance photographer.

I graduated in DAMS (Art, Music and Performing Arts Disciplines) from the Italian University of Bologna. There, I got specialized in Theater Aesthetics, Renaissance Poetics, and I enjoyed the chance to study Photography.

The first cameras I used were a couple of Single Lens Reflex. Afterwards, I started to work with a Rolleiflex 3.5 T. Along with my visual studies and experiments, I had been working for almost ten years in the field of performing arts. I collaborated with several theater groups, mainly in Mexico and Peru, looking forward pre-Columbian cultural traditions.

In my photography, I aim to open a door on an Oneiric World, where scenic spaces, characters, ancient cultures and postmodern society could live together. I perceive and hope to narrate the conspicuous, false, presence of human beings around me; I can see them being lost in labyrinths, groping in the dark.
Actually, I think many people are able to see the kind of rough, ordinary and vulgar blindness which plagues the majority of us; others, simply prefer to keep their eyes wide shut. It's a cultural blindness, not a physical disease; it's frightening.

In my work, I prefer to focus on concepts; thus, I have no preference for a particular photographic genre or technique. I often use Canon digital cameras, but I've a Lubitel too, a Diana Multi-Pinhole, a Rolleiflex, a Polaroid 660, a couple of Canon SLR film cameras (and other constipations / that our fool flesh / is heir to).

I spend significant time organizing educational activities (courses, laboratories and workshops). Most of them are aimed at students who want to learn a specific photographic technique. Nonetheless, I love to seek with students the unique, peculiar, point of view (on Photography, the world, …) that will always characterize their images. In fact, contrary to popular beliefs, there is no such thing as an objectively good way to Photography: good photographers tend to reflect their own path and education, while a host of followers try to imitate their images. I can see no need for even more imitators, thus, I try to let students find their own path and style.

In recent years, namely, since 2006, I begun to collaborate with several Agencies, Corporates and Private Clients, in the field of Fashion and Advertising Photography. My clients are currently worldwide, though I'm mainly based in Milan (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).
