me! by Pedro Moura Pinheiro

You can follow me on Twitter. My manifesto can be found here.

I started taking pictures more seriously at the age of twelve with an Asahi Pentax K1000 (still working!) which belonged to my mother, but I never developed my techniques enough - in part due to the normal lack of discipline teenagers tend to have (e.g., I would have never thought of writing down the settings of each photo on a notebook to know what I was doing wrong or right afterwards), but also due to the lack of information (remember: no internet or google back then!), and of course because of the massive cost that film photography had, especially for a teenager. And who can forget the eternity between that faithful shutter “click” and having the results in your hands?

In 2002, with the (r)evolution of digital photography, the little photography bug started appearing in me again. I still remember one of my best friends saying at the time that we were still many years away from the moment digital photography could compete in terms of quality with film photography…. Who would have imagined that barely four years later in 2006 that Canon, Nikon, and even old traditional Kodak would have stopped production of most models of film cameras in every segment?

Digital photography has many advantages over film photography - besides the question of cost (you pay the same to take one or one thousand photos), edition and quality printing are possible on the most basic of home computers/printers sold today. There’s also the instantaneous transition between the “click” and seeing the results (and if you got it wrong, having the possibility of being able to repeat the same photo with the right settings), and the amazing fact that with each image file, all the settings (speed, aperture, white balance, ISO, etc.) are recorded digitally with the photo. Being your own teacher has become so many orders of magnitude easier.

For me, photography has many functions:

- Helps us preserve memories - who doesn’t like to see the pictures of our parents and grandparents before we were born, with the different fashions, cars, houses, everything!
- Brings to our eyes what is far away, be it someone in your family or some faraway exotic land.
- Makes it possible with long exposures and high speed photography to see what is too dark, slow, bright, or fast.
- It sells! It creates the allure for all kind of products, even before you see them with your own eyes.
- And last but not least, it can have artistic intentions, either by creating certain aesthetics, or by capturing and transmitting emotions.

These are all the reasons why I like to be an apprentice of photography, I hope you enjoy the results!

"I have known Pedro for a long time, maybe about 2/3 of my life. I have always appreciated his true friendship and willingness to help in every situation. In photography, we have shared a lot of information and advice, and I might have influenced him a little bit in the beggining, mostly on general photography theory. Since then, he has evolved much more than me and these days it's the other way around.
I can say that I find Pedro dominates the technique and the equipment very well and he is very careful about all the details in a shot. He also masters post processing techniques which of course are part of the photographers workflow; the work of a photographer does not end with pressing the shutter release button and recording the image.
Thank you Pedro for your friendship and advice, your pictures are a source of inspiration and I think you are creative by nature, so you have a long path of evolution to go through to make your work better and better everyday. I think at some point in time you will make a living of this too!"

"I don't know Pedro that well, but he's really friendly and funny. And when I think about throwing my camera away into the deep blue ocean to never take another photograph -- his unique compositions have made me want to keep trying to reach that place! That's a good thing."

"I have never written any testimony before, but right now I was looking at Pedro's stream and I felt the imperative necessity of writing this. It is very easy to realise Pedro is a great person and he is always there to help you and to let you learn from him, so it has been a blessing to meet him. Besides that, he is a great photographer. That's why I am always expecting his new shots so eagerly, as he loves so much experimenting and creating a new way of perceiving photography. Through his work and trials, he is not the only one who learns, but also his viewers so, please don't forget to keep your eyes wide open!!"

"Starting with the advice that "one doesn't buy a camera, one buys a lens", Pedro has taught me a lot about photography since I met him. And, since his photos are quite good, I have vested him with all kinds of authority. When he gives me advice, I listen. You should too."
