During portrait sessions, I observed that first time mothers oftentimes expressed amazement at the magnitude of sensations they experienced. I felt it was important to preserve and share these expressions in book form. In May of 2005, she began inviting women of the African diaspora to be photographed in my studio as well as asking their thoughts on ‘mama love.’ Over 100 mothers from around the world have participated in the project, ranging from single teens to married professionals. Some are first time mothers, others have many children.
The book aspires to give the viewer a glimpse into this special bond between mothers and their children, acknowledging and honoring their important role in society. The women are not portrayed as Madonnas or mother goddesses to be idolized. They are fully human, expressing all the complexities of parenthood.
Their words also provide us with personal anecdotes that are both heart felt and universal at the same time.
