"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
PLEASE NOTE: not one of my photos is to be used or reproduced in any way shape or form. Understand clearly that these are my photographs and the use of them by anyone is an infringement of my copyrights and personal artistic property!
I was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, then moved to Johannesburg for a while and now live in Cape Town, South Africa. My most time consuming interest is the growing, showing, and photographing of Fuchsias. (Visit my Fuchsia Blog for more info.) Also love to take and share pics of friends and family. Am crazy about my garden and my two German Shepherds. Read a lot, write a little and love trivia quizzes. I have only recently developed an interest in photography and have a great deal to learn with my little compact camera! For now enthusiasm will have to make up for lack of skills!!
A note about Contacts: I choose as contacts people whose work I admire and enjoy, and who show a similar interest in my own work. I try to keep the list fairly limited as my time is limited and I like to be able to visit my contacts fairly regularly - I do expect this to be reciprocated!
It is very flattering to be marked as a contact and I immediately go and take a look at the profile and photostream of anybody who makes me their contact. If I like what I see I will return the compliment.
If, however, their profile is empty and they have no photos to share I will block that person immediately, and if I find that they have an enormous number of contacts (4-500 or more in some cases) I do not reciprocate. There is no way anybody can keep contact with that many people!! Having marked a person as a contact, I make a point of visiting and commenting on their work frequently, always making those who have recently visited me my first stop. Should I become aware that this is a one way street and they are not showing any interest in my work I will drop them from my contact list fairly rapidly.
I've known people to collect all sort of things: antiques, figurines, old books, pens, umbrellas, watches, seashells, recipes.... I have some collections myself. But what I have collected passionately all my life are intangibles: ideas, melodies, poetry, aphorisms, memories. Some things cannot be shelved. Some things cannot be catalogued or classified. Some things exist in places unsummonable by willpower. Some of these things have a way of slipping through your fingers like the purest, finest beach sand; yet they reappear in your mind or your heart the very next time you hear that special song, or when you catch a whiff of the cookie only Mom knew how to bake right, or when a child plants that sweetest of all kisses on your cheek and you suddenly realize the meaning of the phrase "I could just eat you up!" We all collect something, and our most valuable collections are invisible to the naked eye. Some are fluid as quicksilver and some are solid as the Great Pyramids. All are priceless.

"I've been holding off on writing this testimonial because I wanted to find the right words to pay tribute to one of my most wonderful and also one of my very first Flickr friend.
Penny has an incredible eye for beauty. Look at her stream and you will see a true artist in the way of photography, you will see the most wonderful fuchsia collection on Flickr and the most beautiful landscapes .
What touches me even more is that she will send an email to say hello, ask how I am or thank you for a comment that I made on one of her pics.
I am so happy to know you Penny, you truly are the best .
Thank you dear friend for being the kind soul you are."4th February, 2009

Percita says:
"I met Penny on flickr, in fact she was one of the first people I met on Flickr that I did not already know. She came to my site and made a lovely comment and it made my day.
She is a gifted photographer with a keen eye for a great shot. It is always a joy to come and visit her photostream and sample her latest additions.
It's been a real privelelge to get to know a little about her and her world through her own lense.
To me Flickr is like a modern version of a pen pal - and I am blessed by getting to know the beautifully gentle and generous Penny."13th November, 2008

She has a great sense of humor and friendliness that comes with ease and makes you feel like you've known her forever. If you haven't visited her stream I urge you to do so, there is sooooo much of Penny in it!! Thank You for being such a good friend to me and an ouststanding flickr contact too, by the way!!
Love You,

BodhiU (on leave) says:
"Penny East's artistry, joy and talent in photography show in her many flower portraits. Like a painter, Penny manages to bring out brightness, aspects, tone, detail and dimensions of each petal with remarkable photographic ability. Her every photo is a lesson in photographic talent, appreciation and craft'smanship.
Her joy, love and enthusiasm come out to reach the viewer in unprecidented spectacular images.
I marvel at her talent and always look forward to seeing her artistry."21st June, 2008

"What to say about Penny in a public environment??…..OK I’m lost for words that’s a first…Just kidding. I have been viewing Penny’s work for almost two years and am probably delinquent in doing this. I can remember a few years ago trading e-mails of why certain shots never made Explore. Now look at her she is like the McDonalds of Explore, over one billion sold! The only explanation I have for this is that,,,well you people are slow! She has always been this good! Yes her post process has improved but the eye and soul are the same. Beyond that she is a great contact. Always offering encouraging words for my crappy experimentations. I have never met her in person because that would be a danger to the authorities in South Africa but I consider her a friend. In short she is a good person with a great eye! Nuff Said!"

"What first brought me to Penny's photo-stream were her beautiful shots of her beloved Fuchsias. And then a insight into who she was began with her 365 shots. Creative, warm, and fun. The out takes of her furry friends were hilarious. Penny has been a wonderful Flickr contact.
Always there with compliments and encouragement and a lovely array of fantastic botanical photographs! I am honoured to be among her contacts."8th May, 2008
