  "Caroline had the fastest bicycle in town, and there were only a few boys left who she had not whooped. Her radical, wind-blown hair and vintage 50s sunglasses were enough to scare off most boys with a pair of walnuts, but not me. I was from out of town, and didn't know the reputation she had for baiting innocent boys with new Schwinns and Mongooses, betting their lunch money, and then blowing past them down the quarter mile. Hearts were broken and it was just $2 at a time she would earn after school per day. My luck was just about to run out. She came up to me after seeing my bike and asked if I would be up for a little wager. After I finished my ice cream cone, which I mysteriously pulled from my backpack, I took her up on her offer. My $3 lunch money (I come from a wealthy family) against her unopened box of Gogurts and a Fuji apple (I love crisp apples). We lined up, the crowd of 8 year olds began to fill in around us, and with fire pop of someone's bubble gum, we were off. I didn't realize that somehow she let air out of my tires while flirting up a storm of eyes and hair flips. I was obviously going to lose my $3 and any hopes I had of eating the lunch lady's special recipe lasagne. So I threw my bike down and started on her by foot. I finally got close enough to her to grab at her hair, but because I was the most gentleman-like 3rd grader in the school, I didn't pull one hair of hers. I just dropped a shoulder into the side of her and she went flying off her bike and into the iceplant while her bike continued to ghostride another 30 yards into a large pool of blueberry jello. Instead of attacking me and taking my $3 in bounty-hunter fashion, she instead drew up a pretty good conversation with me about how beautiful these spring flowers were, and how at some point wish they would make cameras without film, so that she could shoot them and create warm, spring like photos. I of course laughed at her silly premise, but decided to give her one of my dollars so she and I could head down to the local market and share a 16oz milk... with 2 straws. After joining the band I didn't see much of Caroline after that. But I knew that day back in 1953 I had made a great friend for life. Looks like the internet came to our rescue yet again. Thanks Internet!!"
