O Sister! is a tribute to the popular American music of the 30’s and in general to the golden decades of “Dixie” and “Swing”. The group was created in an attempt to recuperate the open spirit with which jazz was born, when it still lacked the intellectual and even elitist connotation we insist on attributing to it today. Jazz was, quite simply, music to dance to and have fun with, the music of the streets. And all this took place in a social and economic context not unlike the uncertain moments we are living today.

The project is also a tribute to The Boswell Sisters, a ground-breaking female vocal jazz trio, perhaps not as popular as they deserved in spite of being imitated by many later vocal groups and admired by artists as important as Ella Fitzgerald herself.

Despite the years gone by, it is the surprising modernity with which the Boswell Sisters understood and used harmony and vocal resources that encouraged singer Paula Padilla to form this group and recuperate the magic of that style of making music. From that moment on, O Sister! began making its own arrangements, recreating the splendour of vocal jazz in live, elegantly staged and entertaining performances.

O Sister! es un homenaje a la música popular norteamericana de los años 30 y, en general, de las décadas doradas del dixie y del swing. La idea surge como un intento de recuperar aquel espíritu abierto con el que surgió el jazz, cuando aún carecía de esa connotación intelectualizada y hasta elitista que, en muchas ocasiones, nos empeñamos en otorgarle hoy. El jazz era, sencillamente, música para bailar y divertirse; la música de la calle. Y todo ello en un contexto económico y social no sin cierto paralelismo con el que estamos viviendo actualmente.
El proyecto es también nuestro particular tributo a The Boswell Sisters, trío de mujeres pioneras en el jazz vocal que, creemos, no han alcanzado la popularidad que merecían, aún siendo imitadas por muchos grupos vocales posteriores y admiradas por artistas de la talla de Ella Fitzgerald.
La contemporaneidad y lo sorprendente, pese al transcurso de los años, de la manera de entender la armonía y los recursos vocales de las hermanas Boswell, fue lo que nos impulsó a formar este grupo y recuperar así la magia de aquella forma de hacer música. A partir de ahí, hemos añadido nuestros propios arreglos, tratando de reformular el esplendor del jazz vocal desde una perspectiva divertida y centrada en el directo.
