'Public Perceptions of Cornish Mining Landscapes'

Since 2006 I have been undertaking a PhD project which is examining how people's perceptions of the Cornish mining landscape (i.e. industrial archaeology) forms and influences their views about the character of a place.

The landscape in Cornwall was significantly transformed between 1700 and 1914 by tin and copper mining. This industry has contributed to the formation of an exceptional mining landscape which can be found within a variety of settings including the coast, moors, towns and villages, and within the economically deprived heartland as well as the more affluent coastal fringe. I am focusing on a number of different mining landscapes including the villages of St Agnes, Botallack, Minions on Bodmin Moor and Hayle Town. Data willl be collected through questionnaire interviews with members of the public and further data will be collected by conducting interviews with key informants.

The photos here comprise of a small selection of those I taken whilst on fieldwork. I am trying to photograph around the Cornish mining icon - the engine house - the logo of which appears on numerous postcards, sandwich wrappings, cornish pasties, as well as on car stickers and fridge magnets. So some of these are alternative image of mining sites - I hope you enjoy them and please do leave a comment especially if you know or have visited these places
