I love a sense of place - the feeling of walking through a field before, during, and after the carnival, the special energy of night, the atmosphere of places temporarily or permanently shuttered, following the cultural breadcrumbs of people who have preceeded me, the excitement of a new urban area that compels you to wander and stare and try to make sense of it through writing and photography, and the pleasure in recognizing details in one's surroundings that are so ordinary or familiar as to be forgotten by most.
